Tutorial: How to Create Sleek Ponytails

Eunice Lucero | 05 August 2016

Go from day to night without breaking a sweat.

An immaculate, side-swept ponytail is the epitome of day-to-night hair, if we do say so ourselves. Chic, versatile and super easy to achieve (hurrah!), it’s one of those ponytails that can easily keep you looking polished from coffee to cocktails, and effortlessly so. It also lends itself to a myriad of outfit pairings—we’ve yet to find a corporate suit or red-carpet outfit it can’t flatter, TBQH. So yeah, adding this look to your daily skill set, dare we say, is a must. #EverydaySlay

Read on for a quick tutorial on how to recreate these sleek, sexy ponytails at home. Your future busy days will thank you!

Tutorial: How to Create Simple, Runway-Worthy Ponytails

1

Start on clean hair.

Smooth, shiny hair usually starts in the shower. First, wash hair with a lower-sulfate system that promotes frizz-free locks for up to two days, such as Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Smoothing Shampoo and Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Smoothing Conditioner. Rinse thoroughly and proceed to blot hair with a towel and blowdry. Ed’s tip: A thermal protectant, like Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Heat Defense Leave-In Conditioner, protects hair from damage from your dryer (all while retaining that slip!).

2

Apply a smoothing serum or mousse.

Part hair to one side with a fine-toothed comb. Thicker hair in particular holds its structure better with a dollop of mousse (we love the firm control that TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Firm Control Mousse provides). For hair that’s already more manageable, a pin-sized amount of shine serum like Nexxus New York Salon Care Humectress Encapsulate Serum helps give a seal-like sheen, without the stringiness.

3

Create a low ponytail.

Separate a thin lock of hair on your minor parting, and gather the rest of your hair into a low ponytail at your nape, securing it with an elastic. Loop the loose section around the ponytail to conceal the hair tie.

4

Refine your edges

Using a fishtail comb, smooth down any flyaways or halo frizz (or the baby hair that sticks out around your hairline) with leftover product. Make sure your side-sweep is neat and crisp, and that your ends are thoroughly combed out — that’s the gamechanger!

5

Done!

You’re all set! Work with power shoulders, a glitzy cocktail dress and killer confidence.
