Tutorial: The Angst-Free, Summer-Sexy Knotted Bun

Eunice Lucero | 05 July 2016

A lifesaver when it’s literally too hot to function.

There aren’t enough praises to be sung about the knotted bun, especially during hot, humid weather. This simple yet chic hairstyle is a quintessential summer staple, and is one of those quick looks that always seems appropriate, no matter the occasion—making it the perfect day-to-night look.

A knotted bun hairstyle is also a baby-step easier than its more diva-ish cousin, the top knot. The latter, though fashionable, may look and feel tighter and more uncomfortable, particularly for those who don’t necessarily want that much of a facelift or are sensitive to scalp tension. Knotted buns on the other hand, are slightly looser, therefore making it the lazy-sexy updo of choice for brunches, dancefloor throwdowns, hangovers and general life-living. Which, as you can see, are just, like, all the most relevant boxes ever.

Read on for our superfast knotted bun tutorial guaranteed to keep you cute from backyard grilling to date-night chilling in no time:

Tutorial: The Chic, Angst-Free Knotted Bun

1

Start with freshly washed hair (or not).

The beauty of a knotted bun is its pretty legit middle-of-the-day potential. If you’re looking to start the day with it though, prep hair by washing with a gentle cleansing shampoo and conditioner. A system that can help strengthen and fortify your strands (for all that tugging), like Suave Professionals Biotin Infusion Strengthening Shampoo and Suave Professionals Biotin Infusion Strengthening Conditioner, is ideal. Otherwise, a dusting of a sebum-sopping dry shampoo like Dove Refresh+Care Detox & Purify Dry Shampoo can give strands an instant refresh, which simulates a newly-washed traction.

2

Dry with a vent brush.

Loosely dry hair with a vent brush (it has slats on the head for efficient airflow, making for shorter drying times). If hair is already dry, simply brush out the lengths to smoothen and detangle.

3

Create a high pony.

Gather hair into a high ponytail at your crown. The base can be as smooth or as bumpy/boho-looking as you like; the look should be easy-breezy pretty, but still like you put in some effort. Note: Don’t make the ponytail too tight. Wiggle it slightly to give it some breathing room.

4

Coil hair around the base.

Create your knot by looping hair around the base of the pony. We recommend using bobby pins inserted at the seams for a more relaxed, wispy result, but thicker, coarser hair types might need a real hair tie for more security. In this case, choose a fabric-covered hair elastic without a metal bar, and gently figure-eight it around the base.

5

Loosen some tendrils.

Pick out some tendrils on your temples or nape to soften the look and add to the bun’s bohemian vibe. You can also finish the entire look with some humidity- and UV-blocking hairspray, like TRESemmé Climate Control Finishing Spray, which is perfect for the season. Voilà, instant summer sexy!
