Braid aficionados, you’re in for a treat.
Romance and mysticism via some fun fishtail braids and scarf buns were in the cards at the Spring/Summer 2017 showing of alice + olivia for New York Fashion Week. Stacey Bendet’s collection for the brand, which was set in Rome’s Bomarzo gardens, took on a whimsical, earthy feel—with nothing else but tarot cards as the main inspiration. “The collection is about the power of positivity and even though life sends us so many messages, it is all about how we interpret them—that is the beauty of the tarot card, it is totally interpretive,” she says.
The quirky, eclectic pieces were set off by equally unique, soft focus, textured hair, with none other than TRESemmé‘s Jeanie Syfu at the helm. Read on for a step-by-step guide on how to replicate the fishtail braids from backstage at NYFW:
How to Get the Fishtail Braids at alice + olivia Spring/Summer 2017
Step 1: Start with damp hair.
Prep damp hair with a texturized all the way from the root throughout the lengths. Brush the product through for a fluffy, airy texture.
Step 2: Create your part.
Part hair down the center from hairline to nape. Using a 1 1/4″ curling iron, make loose waves along the part to texturize and impart volume onto your tresses. Tip: Tease hair gently near the roots for extra lift and bounce. After teasing/backcombing hair, clamp one half and set aside.
Step 3: Create your fishtail braids.
Starting on your loose section, begin your fishtail on one pigtail section. Starting from below the earline start braiding, securing the end with an elastic. Repeat on the opposite side.
Step 4: Bubble it up.
Segment both fishtail braids by tying on additional hair elastics along the mid-length to create more shape. Wrap a few strands around the elastics or tuck them into the weave.
Step 5: Get mussy with it.
Using your fingers, gently pancake the plaits to give them a texturized, disheveled feel (you can also pull out a few pieces to achieve a wispier look). Finish up with a light coating of hairspray, such as TRESemme Perfectly (un)Done Brushable Hold Hairspray, for touchable hold that lasts.
