Put some oomph in those locks.

Thin hair, thick hair, short hair, long hair… If done the right way, teasing hairstyles, regardless of length, can be just the trick to taking your look to the next level. Whether you want to add a little extra volume to your crown via a flirty beehive or go all out for a purposefully frizzy, volumized appearance, with the right tools your hair will be able to reach new heights.

If you’re a newbie to the whole teasing process, don’t fret—we’re here to give you a little inspo to bring it to life with an array of teasing hairstyles and backcombing techniques previously kept secret by stylists everywhere. You’re welcome!

5 Teasing Hairstyles and Backcombed Looks

A vintage-inspired updo is a ladylike look that never goes out of style.

1. Retro bouffant

To create this look, grab a rat-tail comb and a can of hairspray (we like TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Hold Hairspray for its fab scent and killer staying power). Section hair, then tease at the roots of each section, but be sure to leave the front untouched. Once you finish teasing each section, take the front smooth section of hair and brush it back over the teased sections with a boar-bristled brush to create a smooth exterior on top of the puffy interior. Next, pin hair up into the bouffant shape of your choice. Don’t forget to seal it in with hairspray spritzed around 12 inches from your head for an allover even hold.

2. Half-up quiff

If you want some volume, but not have hair that’s puffy all over, then this is the look for you. Seen on celebrities left and right,(as well as on the latest ruways), this look has a certain undeniable fashionable twist. Just as you would tease for an all-over bouffant, simply backcomb the top section of your half-updo and brush the very front layer back over top of it. Depending on the height you’re looking to achieve, use the tail end of your rat-tail comb and gently tug upwards until your desired height is in place.

3. Faux ‘fro

Not everyone is blessed with locks that can be styled into a real afro. Thankfully, teasing hairstyles can work wonders on the roots; however it takes a bit more precision and products to make this work all over. If you’re trying to rock a faux ‘fro for your next night out, start off by washing your hair with a volumizing duo like TRESemmé Beauty-Full Volume Pre-Wash Conditioner and Shampoo to create the perfect canvas for your teased look. After you wash your hair, add in a couple pumps of volumizing mousse, like Dove Style+Care Curls Defining Mousse, from root to tip. To finish the look, blowdry hair and tease along the entire length of your strands. Voilà!

4. Side-swept va-va-volume

We love this edgy look because it allows one side of your head to be super sleek, while the other is pumped up with volume—kind of like a faux side-shave, but with less commitment. To make the smooth side as sleek as possible, massage some Suave Professionals Moroccan Infusion Styling Oil for added shine and manageability.

5. Teased top knot

Your top knot looking too contrived? Teasing is here to fix that. When you create a bun with teased hair, it helps it look bigger and more stylish than ever before, as the texture imbibes it with more personality and a modern, tousled feel.
