Can Using Avocado Work for Your Hair?

Can an Avocado Benefit Your Hair?
A simple DIY blend of avocado can serve as a weekly hair mask.

1. How Avocados Can Help Your Hair

Avocados are a great source of fatty acids, vitamins, and protein that can help to moisturize and protect your hair from damage. Specifically, avocados are filled with unsaturated fatty acids, oleic, and linolenic acids. Both of these are are fatty acids which help to make your hair super shiny and hydrated.

2. How to Use Avocado on Your Hair

To reap the benefits of the avocado, you’ll need to make a hair mask. You’ll need one ripe avocado, and another oil to mix it with, like olive oil or coconut oil. Remove all the meat from the avocado and mash it thoroughly in a bowl. Then, mix in your other oil until it is thin enough to work through your hair. Apply the mixture to your whole head of hair, using a plastic wide tooth comb to help work it through. Let the mixture sit on your hair for no longer than 30 minutes.

After letting your hair soak up as much of the mask as possible, you’ll need to rinse it out. Because there will be a lot of avocado in your hair, you should probably do this in the kitchen sink with a mesh strainer over the drain. This will catch any avocado you don’t want going down your pipes. Use a wide-tooth comb to help you thoroughly rinse out the hair mask. Follow up by washing your hair with a cleaning shampoo, like the  Suave Essentials Daily Clarifying Shampoo and the Suave Essentials Daily Clarifying Conditioner. This combo will ensure that your hair is cleansed and conditioned as it gets the remaining parts of the avocado out of your hair.

3. When Not to Use Avocado on Your Hair

Even though there are a lot of benefits to using an avocado mask, it may not be right for everyone. If you have pretty healthy hair you should stick to using a less oily mask, like the Nexxus New York Salon Care Youth Renewal Treatment Masque, at least once a week. Also, those with thin hair probably should avoid an avocado mask since its rich oils might weight down your hair type, causing it to look and feel greasy.
