Summer is just around the corner and it’s the ideal time to perfect your braiding skills. Change up your usual three-strand by adding a pop of color in the form of a brightly colored ribbon. Creating braids with ribbon can be a challenge if you’ve never done it before—ensuring that your ribbon stays exposed is harder than it looks! But this quick tutorial makes creating braids with ribbon a little easier. Ready to learn the tricks of the trade? Read on:

Tutorial: Creating Braids with Ribbon

1

Prep your hair.

Start off by washing hair with a shampoo and a conditioner (we love how Love Beauty and Planet Indian Lilac and Clove Shampoo and Indian Lilac and Clove Conditioner revive dull hair and give it a glossy shine.) Next, prep your hair with Bed Head by TIGI Superstar Queen for a Day Thickening Spray to add volume and thickness to your style.

Create a ponytail.

Pull your hair into a side ponytail and secure it with a hair tie.

3

Tie the ribbon around the base.

To start your braids with ribbon, secure the ribbon around the base of the ponytail by looping it in a small knot around the hair tie.

Begin braiding.

Begin your three-strand braid and include the ribbon in one of the three strands. Be sure to keep the ribbon at the front of the style to ensure it remains visible.

Continue braiding until you reach the end of your hair.

Secure the end.

Grab a clear hair tie and secure the end of the braid by wrapping the hair tie around the tail a few times.
