Check out our guide below on:
- How do you do an easy updo for long hair?
- How can you do a voluminous updo?
Start on wavy hair.
Nikki starts on wavy hair as a base for this chignon updos for long hair, as it gives “a little more body and a little more movement” to the overall look.
Then, refresh your existing waves as well as revitalize your scalp with a misting of Dove Refresh+Care Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo. Tip: Hold arms 12 inches away, or until they form a capital letter L, to ensure an even coating throughout your hair.
Part and section your hair.
Nikki suggests parting your hair as you would normally (she usually does a middle or off-center part). Then, create another partline behind your ear, effectively forming a section near your hairline.
Then, twist the hairline section around itself and set it aside with a duckbill clip. Repeat this process on the other side of your hair.
Brush your hair down and secure it.
Brush your loose hair vertically downwards from your hairline. Then using that same brush, gather hair into a ponytail near your nape. Secure with a hair tie.
Then, backcomb the ponytail by using a rat-tail comb as you brush towards the root area.
Finally, brush the backcombed pony out in the correct root-to-tip direction to smoothen it out. This will result in a fluffy ponytail with a lot of airy texture.
Create your chignon updo hairstyle on natural hair.
Coil the ponytail up on natural hair around its own base, creating a bun. Secure with as many hair pins as necessary to make sure that your twisted hairstyle is tight.
Unclip the hairline sections.
Let down your previously clipped section near the hairline.
Then, take down a small section of your hair to frame your face. Then, split the second section into two parts and twist it; one around the other. Keep twisting the two sections until you reach the ends.
Wrap your bun.
Take your twisted section and wrap it over and around your chignon. Secure with hairpins and use as many as you need.
Remove the clip on the opposite side. Repeat the process of twisting and then coiling it around the chignon.
Frame your updo hairstyle for long hair.
Tuck in the two pieces of hair that fall along the sides of your face behind your ears. Then, push the front area of your hair slightly forward for a nice wave. Nikki says that you can also bobby pin that section into place if you need it to be a little more secure.
Then, lock in this style by using some of the TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Hold Hairspray.

For a mellow night out on the town after hours, an easy transitional updo may be your best option. Celebrate your last days of after-work rooftop drinks with a casual bun. Opt for Suave Professionals Sleek Shampoo followed by Suave Professionals Sleek Conditioner. To style, clip away a section of hair at the front of your head then gather the back section into a ponytail. Wrap the hair ends into a bun and secure with bobby pins. For a nice flourish, take your front section, pull it back, and sweep it around the base of your bun. Set the style in place with hairspray if needed.
3. Wavy Top Knot

4. Flat-Twist Bun
Many brides choose to schedule their wedding festivities towards the end of the summer season. It may be that’s it’s just a tad more budget-friendly, for one, and two, the weather just might be milder in the event that it’s held outdoors (No need to have makeup melting off their faces in the hot sun!).
