11 Low Ponytail Looks to Try for Maximum Levels of Chic
How low can you go?
In case you missed it, the low ponytail has quickly become the new ‘it style’ of the year. And it’s easy to see why: these ponytails start at the nape of your neck for an ultra-sleek look that takes minutes to create.
Since there are a zillion ways you can style a low ponytail, we’re sharing a few of our favorites that you can easily recreate (and rock!) at home.
11 Low Ponytail Looks to Try
Read on to get inspired by some of our favorite low ponytails:
1. Twisted Ponytail
Looking for a simple update on the classic ponytail? Try out a quick twist. This particular style splits your hair directly in half and twists one section inwards. Leave that other section as is for a little contrast and secure into place. Consider this a one minute update to your average low pony.
2. Ultra-Sleek
TRESemmé
TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shine Serum
For the top of the line, über chic ponytail, go for a sleek look. We like to use a serum when doing this style to ensure there are no flyaways or frizz. Use the TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Serum on damp hair before you blow-dry your hair straight. Brush your hair back with a boar-bristled brush for an extra smooth finish and make sure to secure the ponytail nice and tight. Get extra style points for covering your hair tie with a sleek ribbon.
3. Folded Ponytail
Want to wear a shorter updo to show off an open-back top? Or maybe you’re having a dirty hair day and you’re in a rush. Try this easily folded ponytail in either situation. Loosely gather your hair into a low ponytail and start to secure in place. Once you’ve done one loop with the ponytail holder, fold that tail in half and continue to secure.
4. Low Pigtails
Not into a single ponytail? Double it up for a sophisticated low pigtail look. The lower the better when it comes to making ponytails look adult-chic instead of schoolgirl style. Covering those ponytail holders with a section of hair will do even more to up the age range on this look.
5. Stacked Low Ponytail
We love this stacked ponytail look for the gym. It’s great if your hair is on the short side, or if you have tons of layers. All you need to do is pull horizontal sections of your hair into a ponytail, then incorporate that tail into the next section. After two or three you’ll get this cool waterfall effect to your pony.
6. Tied-Up Low Pony
Okay, how cool does this ponytail look? It looks like a complicated style but it actually couldn’t be easier to create this look. Start this style by roughly separating your hair in half. Then, take those two halves and literally tie them like you’re tying a knot! Make sure to hold both sides together, secure the ponytail below the knot you created. Because this style isn’t as secure as most ponytails we suggest setting the whole style with hairspray. We like Dove Style+Care Extra Hold Hairspray to lock in this style.
7. Ultra-Messy Low Pony
This is the messy low ponytail of our dreams. Take random sections of hair and twist and pin them into place in the center back of your head. Keep on twisting and pinning until all of your hair is collected at the nape of your neck. To complete the look, secure your hair with a hair tie!
8. Bubble Ponytail
There are something so modern and so ’80s about the bubble ponytail that we can’t get enough of. This style, in case you forgot, needs a whole bunch of mini hair elastics. Tie those elastics nice and tight to get enough tension to make this style work. Put in your first two elastics about an inch or so apart, then tug to create the bubble look. Keep on adding hair ties until you’ve secured and bubbled out all of your hair!
9. Unicorn Ponytail
Unicorn styles are straight-up magical. And, surprisingly easy-to-do! Simply split your hair into three sections, vertically. French braid the center section backward all the way to the ends and secure with a mini elastic. Then, take the other two sections of hair and secure them at the nape of your neck. Use a bobby pin or two to attach the braid to the ponytail! And just like that, you’re a unicorn, too.
10. Braided and Teased Ponytail
Start off this style by doing a three-strand braid with a large section of hair from the nape of your neck. Then, using TRESemmé TRES Two Mega Firm Control Gel, slick down the top half of your hair. Wrap that braid around like a headband and secure all of your hair at the nape of your neck. Finish off this style by teasing that ponytail to new heights!
11. Classic Look
We can’t forget the classic when professing our love for the ponytail. This sleek look is all about a controlled base that accentuates your face and gorgeous mane. Smooth down any frizz or flyaways with some serum, and you’re good to go.
