Tutorial: Two Ways to Create Low Pigtails

Two ways to rock pigtails like an adult.

When you think of pigtail ponytails your mind probably takes a trip down memory lane. You instantly think about how this hairstyle was a favorite of yours when you were 10. Today, you probably wouldn’t think to style your hair into that kiddie hairstyle, but, we may be able to change your mind because pigtails are back with a vengeance! Yup, you heard us right. Pigtails are back! However, my friend, there is a way that this hairstyle can be worn to ensure a less juvenile look and feel.

In order to keep this hairstyle fresh, modern and, well, adult, style them in a more fashionable way. And of course, complement your hairstyle with an on-trend outfit to match. Here, we’ve got two ways to get the look: Pristine and neat, or messy and cool. Take your pick! Whether you’d like to wear your pigtail ponytails neat or undone, read on to learn how you can get either look at home. While you’re at it, be sure to file both of these looks under your list of easy and quick hairstyles. Trust us, this list will come in handy one day:

“No Hair Tie” Low Pigtails

Neat and simple way to rock the low pigtail look.

Step 1: Detangle clean hair.

Beginning on dry, clean hair, brush through to make sure your hair is tangle and snag-free.

Step 2: Create your part.

Make a part down the center of your hair and clip each section away. Using the tail of a rattail comb, take out a section of hair at the back close to your part on each side. You will be using this hair to wrap around your pigtails and to secure them in place.

Step 3: Create your ponytail.

Brush one side of your hair down, then hold in place with one hand. Using your other hand, take the section of hair and wrap around the base of your ponytail then use a hairpin to keep in place. Alternatively, you can wrap the hair around, leaving enough ends to tuck into your ponytail base to create a knot. If you decide on doing it this way, no hairpins will be needed. Just be sure to pull hair taut to prevent your ponytail from loosening. Repeat this step on the opposite side of your hair.

Step 4: Add shine.

Finish your look by adding a nice sheen. Apply Suave Professionals Moroccan Infusion Styling Oil along the surface of your hair, as well as your hair ends. We like how it works to condition your hair and make it shiny.

Step 1: Start dry and create your part.

It’s best to try this style on hair that already has a little bit of texture from previous styling. If not, you can surely create some texture to your hair on your own. Create a part down the center of your hair. You can go for a clean straight part or something a little less perfect and undone to complement the lived-in look of this style.

Step 2: Create two loose ponytails.

You enhance the messy look of this hairstyle, you can use your hands to create your undone pigtail ponytails. Finger-comb hair into two low ponytails, then secure with a hair elastic. If you want to add waves to your ends, spray Dove Style+Care Smooth and Shine Heat Protection Spray then use a flat iron to create sultry waves.

Step 3: Backcomb the ends.

One at a time, take your ponytails, lift them up then run a fine-toothed comb through the sections down towards the base of your pigtails. Repeat backcombing until you get the teasing effect you desire.

Step 4: Finish with hairspray.

To finish off your style, spritz with a holding spray to keep your look in place. Try TIGI Copyright Custom Complete Volume Finishing Spray. We like how this formula works to provide flexible hold and a touchable finish.
