Rock & Roll Hair at Alice + Olivia NYFW S/S 2018

Squad goals!

If there was any indication that summer is over, it’s the resurgence of polished, evening-worthy hair on the runways. But what of the Cool Girl, the one who always has a hype song on while glamming up and who throws caution to the wind, never spending more than 20 minutes getting ready (or at least never admits to it)? Enter Alice + Olivia. The wildly popular New York label fronted by contemporary wünderkind Stacy Bendet has churned out yet another stunner of a collection, featuring her signature feminine, colorful, magpie-chic frocks edged up with rock details. To bring a cohesive feel to the brand’s highly individualized looks, TRESemmé Global Stylist (and celeb fave) Justine Marjan went for rock & roll hair, specifically those evocative of the slept-in, glam-rock zenith during the 1970s. “We’re doing a rock and roll-inspired wave on the girls, so we’re giving them all really clean center parts,” Marjan explained. Read on to see how to recreate this ’gram-worthy downtown look we’re so copping the moment we’re out the door:

Justine puts the finishing touches on the ’70s-inspired waves at Alice + Olivia.

“We’re spraying TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Hold Hairspray on dry hair, brushing that through. We’re also using a flat iron to put a bevel in the hair so we get this really nice S-pattern wave,” Marjan divulges, while demonstrating backstage. And indeed, the results are exactly what we’d think an Alice + Olivia gal would love: on-trend, but effortless. “Change the direction of the flat iron when creating waves for the most natural finish,” she also advises.

Rock & roll hair can be achieved on various textures.

Step 1: Start by washing hair with TRESemmé Repair & Protect 7 Shampoo and Repair & Protect 7 Conditioner (or make like Marjan did and spray your roots with TRESemmé Volumizing Dry Shampoo for a bit of revitalized lift and grit). Follow up with TRESemmé Repair & Protect 7 Pre-Styling Spray to protect hair against breakage and tool damage.

Step 2: Rough-dry hair with a blowdryer.

A closed flat iron acts as a crimper for creating the bends.

A center part with lazy waves = right on.

Step 3: Part hair in the middle for that true 1970s, rock & roll hair aesthetic. Using a 1 1/4” curling iron or flat iron, twist hair around, going in opposite directions.

Step 4: Define waves around the face and straighten the ends if necessary for a more tousled look.

Serum on the ends helps texturize and separate.

Step 5: Mist hair with TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Hold Hairspray for hold and frizz protection. Brush through for a not-too-polished finish, using just your fingers or a soft boar-bristled brush.

Step 6: Take a tiny amount of TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Shine Serum (around a pinprick amount) between palms, and run it through the ends to rough them up for a rock & roll hair effect.

Tousled, effortless waves balance out the femininity in Stacy Bendet’s Spring/Summer 2018 offering.
