This season, it’s all about going with the ‘fro.

If you’re anything like the naturalistas here at All Things Hair HQ, you tend to gravitate towards carefree styles, like big afros and easy wash and go looks. We can’t blame you! Not only do they look fun, fierce and super confident, these styles also help lessen the amount of time one usually spends in the styling department.

We’re helping you achieve your best afro yet, so read on to learn more about how to get the best big afro style that works for every season:

Step 1: Wash your hair with a volumizing hair care system.

Great hair all begins in the shower! If you prefer to use a volumizing shampoo, go for it. The volumizing agents in the shampoo can help you achieve the big afro style you’re after. For fine hair types, we suggest using Dove Oxygen Moisture Shampoo and Dove Oxygen Moisture Conditioner to give your hair a boost of volume and hydration. Some dryer hair types like to supplement with a leave-in conditioner that also helps remove any knots, such as Dove Absolute Curls Leave-In Detangler.

Step 2: Blow-dry or air-dry your hair.

This all depends on how much time you’re working with. If you have plenty, go for the air-dry method, then apply your leave-in conditioner. To help you stretch your hair while air-drying, soak up as much water as you can from your hair and then create four jumbo braids or twists. Allow your hair to dry completely in the braids then move on to the next step. This can take a few hours, depending on how thick your hair texture is.

Step 4: Pick your fro.

Get your afro pick out and go to work! Pick your hair until you get the height you love. If needed, you can use your blow-dryer set on medium heat to blow the roots, encouraging volume.

Step 5: Set your hair in place.

This step is super effective but often overlooked. To ensure that your afro hairstyle stays in place, set your hair with a flexible hold hairspray, like Dove Style+Care Strength & Shine Flexible Hold Hairspray.
