Hair enameling gives you the same worry-free comfort of a slicked-back, wet-hair look. You know your hair will stay in place all day, but you’ll have the polished look of a sleek updo. Plus, we can’t forget about the high-shine–You’re hair will be glowing!

All About Hair Enameling

We can’t help but notice the similarities between the “clean-girl” aesthetic that’s dominating TikTok and hair enameling. Both looks are very similar. They’re sleek, easy to achieve, and quite reliable. We mean, who doesn’t want a go-to, fool-proof look they can do on those bad hair days?

What is Hair Enameling?

Hair enameling is a high-shine, slicked-back hairstyle. It commonly has a side part with the hair gathered into a low ponytail or bun at the back of your head. While this look achieves that wet-hair style, what sets it apart from other slicked styles is the softness. This style uses gel, but your hair doesn’t become rockhard. Your strands are shiny and slick while still feeling soft. Personally, that’s something we’re thrilled about.

With the resurgence of shine and shimmer in clothing and makeup, it’s no surprise that we’re seeing this look carry over into the hair space.

How to Achieve Hair Enameling?

Trust us, this look is easy to do. You’ll be a put-together, pro in no time.

1. Create Your Part

Start by creating a deep side part in your hair. To make this easier, use a skinny comb to make sure it’s perfectly straight and there aren’t any stray hairs on the wrong side.

2. Gel Your Hair

After your hair is parted, apply a small dollop of gel. Using a small amount of gel will smooth down any flyaways and create a sleek look without making your hair feel hard and crunchy. When brushing the gel through your hair, brush down, following the shape of your hair. You want to show off the deep side part, so make sure you don’t end up gelling your hair straight back.

One of our favorite gels is SheaMoisture Papaya & Neroli All Day Frizz Control Milk Gel. We love this gel because it’s alcohol-free, which helps to make your hair feel hydrated. The gel also helps tame frizz and is infused with Papaya, juicy Neroli, Elderflower, and Fair Trade Shea Butter, which works to add beautiful shine without making your hair feel hard. Plus, you don’t need to worry about this gel flaking.

3. Gather Your Hair into an Updo

Next, secure your hair enameling look in place with an updo. Based on your preference, opt for a low bun or low ponytail. If you don’t want to worry about your hair one bit during the day, go for the bun. However, if the rest of your hair is having a moment or maybe you’re loving the texture of it, pick the ponytail.

When going for the bun, secure it in place with a hair tie or break out the bobby pins and start pinning that bun in place. If the ponytail is more your style, secure it with a hair elastic or hair tie.

4. Finish with a Spray

So, it’s time to finish off your style and truly achieve that hair enameling look. Once you have your updo secured, use a shine spray, like Bed Head by TIGI Masterpiece Shine Hair Spray. This spray will add a little extra hold to your style while amping up the shine factor.

If you’re working with a wig or weave, SheaMoisture Wig & Weave Tea Tree & Borage Seed Oil Shine Spray is the perfect option. This spray will help add that extra dose of shine you’re looking for without making your strands feel heavy or greasy.
