Tutorial: How to Create a Women’s Fauxhawk on Long Hair + 5 Looks to Try

For the female faux hawk on long hair, it's a yes to eagle-eyed sectioning, and no to shaving of any kind!

Are you looking for a faux hawk women love? The swag factor of a mohawk is undeniable: Brash, punky, and unapologetically subversive, it’s a hairstyle that’s stood in the face of convention. Since being reintroduced into modern times (it’s been a Native American and Irish staple for centuries), it’s found a more mainstream version in the women’s fauxhawk, or fake women’s mohawk, for gals who can’t quite go to those extremes just yet.

For those that can’t commit to shaving (or, if you want to be culturally accurate, plucking) their heads, the female faux hawk imparts a similarly tall, brush-like spoke on the center of your head. Less tribal and more #squad, the fauxhawk for women is one of the edgiest cool-girl hairstyles out there. We’re in luck too: When it comes to looks like the fauxhawk female styles typically don’t require any drastic cutting or shaving (unless you already have an undercut, in which case go you!).

Faux Hawk Women: Step by Step

Read on to learn more about how you can create a faux hawk women on long hair. No shaving or cutting required, we promise.

1

Start with clean hair.

Shampoo and condition your hair with a moisturizing and shine-imparting wash and care system, such as Suave Professionals Moroccan Infusion Shine Shampoo and Suave Professionals Moroccan Infusion Shine ConditionerThis will leave your strands with a healthy gleam. Blow-dry as usual, preserving your natural texture for a rougher feel.

Section off the crown.

Thoroughly brush hair through to remove any knots and tangles, and section off your topmost layer of hair. Temporarily hold up with a clamp or knot.

3

Begin twisting small sections.

Starting an inch below the clamped area moving downwards, begin on one side of your head. Twirl hair around itself until you reach the mid-shaft, and then fasten the lock onto the middle of your head with a bobby pin, leaving the mid-lengths to ends to loosely fall in the middle.

Repeat on next lower layer.

Repeat on the next section of hair below, working on twisting hair on just one side of your head and securing in the middle with a pin.

Twist and pin, twist and pin.

Continue twirling hair and pinning it to the middle of your head, working section by section from the top of your head towards the nape to create your women’s fauxhawk.

Finish twisting hair until the nape.

Continue till the bottom-most layer of hair on your neckline.

Do it again on the other side.

Repeat the twisting and pinning process on the opposite side of your head, starting again from the topmost layer near your crown moving downwards. Make sure to line up the sections to the first set you did on the left as much as possible. If not, no biggie; the loose hair in the middle can hide any crooked part lines. A faux hawk women hairstyle shouldn’t be too fussy to begin with.

Ensure that your sections line up.

For a sharper, cleaner fauxhawk, make sure to line up the sections of the first set you did on the left to the new ones on the right as much as possible. If not, no biggie; the loose hair in the middle can hide any crooked part lines. Finish up till your neckline, then remove the clamp on your crown.

Backcomb the crown.

To create that telltale fauxhawk heft, start teasing the hair at your crown with a rat-tail or fishtail comb, concentrating on the base of the hair.

Give it a final twirl.

Use your fingers to twirl the topmost layer for good measure.

Release the twirl, then set your fab faux hawk women’s look by giving your hair an allover misting with a hairspray like TRESemmé TRES Two Freeze Hold Hairspray for lasting control of your women’s fauxhawk.
