If you’re looking for a tutorial on how to do box braids, then you’ve come to the right place. A box braid style is one of our favorite protective hairstyles. Apart from the fact that it’s a cool braided style, box braids also have the extra advantage of being both practical and versatile.

If you learn how to do box braids yourself you’ll be glad to know that you are saving yourself a ton of money as this still can be quite expensive when done by a professional. Read on as we show you how to do Insta-worthy box braids on your own hair right at home:

1

Section your hair.

Begin by detangling your hair with a brush or wide-tooth comb. After detangling your hair, use your comb to part hair horizontally at the back and clip the top half of hair away. This will be the first section for your box braids.

2

Coat hair with a strong hold gel.

Take one of the small sections of hair and coat it from the root to mid-section with a strong hold gel. We love Nexxus Extra Hold Sculpting Gel because it helps smooth your hair before braiding.

3

Secure with an elastic band.

Add an elastic band to each section of hair (as if you’re creating a mini ponytail). This setp can make the braiding process so much easier.

4

Add hair extensions.

Next, grab your braiding extensions and comb through it to remove any tangles before you begin braiding it with your section of hair.

5

Begin braiding.

Add the extensions to your hair on top of the hair elastic you applied to the section and begin braiding as you normally would.

6

Continue braiding.

Braid your hair all the way down to the ends.

7

Repeat steps 1-6.

Continue braiding your hair using the steps you’ve learned above.

8

Dip your braids in hot water.

Please proceed with caution when performing this step! Boil water and then dip your braids into it. This may sound crazy, but the hot water helps set the braids in place. This is how to do box braids yourself just like a professional!

9

Brush your edges.

Next, it’s time to groom your edges! Use Bed Head by TIGI Stick and a toothbrush to help you with this process. Brush your edges into the shape you desire.
