How to Do Box Braids Step by Step
Section your hair.
Begin by detangling your hair with a brush or wide-tooth comb. After detangling your hair, use your comb to part hair horizontally at the back and clip the top half of hair away. This will be the first section for your box braids.
Coat hair with a strong-hold gel.
Take one of the small sections of hair and coat it from the root to mid-section with a strong hold gel. We love SheaMoisture Papaya & Neroli All Day Frizz Control Styling Gel because it helps smooth your hair before braiding.
Secure with an elastic band.
Add an elastic band to each section of hair (as if you’re creating a mini ponytail). This step can make the braiding process so much easier.
Add hair extensions.
Next, grab your braiding extensions and comb through it to remove any tangles before you begin braiding it with your section of hair.
Begin braiding.
Add the extensions to your hair on top of the hair elastic you applied to the section and begin braiding as you normally would.
Dip your braids in hot water.
Please proceed with caution when performing this step! Boil water and then dip your braids into it. This may sound crazy, but the hot water helps set the braids in place. This is how to do box braids yourself just like a professional!
Brush your edges.
Next, it’s time to groom your edges! Use Bed Head by TIGI Stick and a toothbrush to help you with this process. Brush your edges into the shape you desire.
Final look!
Now you’re practically a pro at box braiding your own hair. Makw sure to finish off with a light hairspray like Suave Professionals Natural Smooth Micro Mist Hairspray for hold if desired, and then you’re all set!
