It may be one of the easiest looks in the book, but we find that oftentimes, guys with thicker, coarser hair with strands that are of medium length have a harder time acing that perfect side slick hair look. When done incorrectly, their overall look can somehow end up looking too stringy, greasy or overloaded with product—or all of the above.

The trick, as we have learned from several hair experts in the biz (and NOT from creepily ogling best-tressed strangers on the street, cough) lies in product application—specifically, in the number of times you reach for that tub of gel. Noobs usually spread on a big clump of product, all in one go; the discerning gentleman (that’s you, btw) does it in a two-step process, before and after each parting, for an even, dapper finish. Sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many dudes, in the interest of time and the A.M. snooze button, just slap on their product without a second thought.

In need of a quick walk-through? Read on for an easy step-by-step tutorial on perfecting that classic, non-greasy side slick hair look:

Tutorial: Side Slick Hair

1

Start with clean, freshly washed hair.

Scalp residue and product buildup can make hair look greasier faster, so best to start with a clean slate. Wash with a clarifying system, such as Dove Men+Care Fresh & Clean Fortifying 2-in-1 Shampoo + Conditioner, which is also infused with caffeine and menthol for an extra morning zing.

Part your hair and apply product.

After rough-drying and parting hair to one side, apply a finger-swipe amount of gel or pomade (we like the chic, non-greasy finish of AXE Signature Clean Cut Look: Classic Pomade) onto your thinner part. This will slick down your hair to define the side slick hair look.

Comb through.

Using your fingers, mat down your thinner side with product. Refine with a fine-toothed comb to smoothen hair and ensure product goes on evenly.

Prep for some pomade again.

Take two finger-swipes of pomade to prepare to slick down your thicker part.

Rub pomade between your palms.

To ensure a foolproof, super even application, the key is to warm up the product by rubbing it in between your palms.

Fix your thicker part.

Finish your side slick hair look by slicking your thicker part last. You can refine it with a fine-toothed comb for a smoother, more formal look, or simply use your fingers for a bit of a casual tousle for daytime. Tip: Try to comb it over at an angle for a younger, more trendy feel.

Done!

You side slick hair is complete. Spread any leftover product on your palms on your back and sides, carefully smoothing down hair as you go. You’re all set!

Remember, the trick is to apply product in two parts, and to always refine with a comb afterwards. Good luck!
