Tutorial: The Easiest Curly Braided Updo You’ve Got To Try

Easier than getting those coveted dinner reservations!

Happy Hearts Day! Valentine’s Day is officially the third of the romantic holiday trifecta, and along with Christmas and New Year’s Day, marks the last buzzy, super date-y occasion till we hit Easter. Unfortunately, it also happens to occur during the coldest time of the year (and a working weekday!), which kind of puts a damper on the festivities too. That said, we totally get the last-minute frenzy, between rushing from work in time for that dinner date to figuring out how to look cute in sub-zero weather—in this case, via an easy curly braided updo that’s super quick to create.

We love ourselves a no-brainer romantic look for Valentine’s Day, and this curly braided updo, which is an upgraded version of a regular top knot, is right up our (lazy-girl) alley. It’s a flirty take on a classic, which is, admittedly, the look most of us love to sport during V-Day: feminine with a cool, up-to-date edge. Read on to see how to nail the hairstyle in less time it took you to make reservations at that hot new restaurant for tonight:

Tutorial: Romantic and Easy Curly Braided Updo for Valentine’s Day

Start with clean, freshly washed hair.

Unless you’re into rocking second-day hair on your big date (equally awesome too, btw), we like fashioning an updo with strands that have some grip. Washing hair can help rid your locks of buildup and sebum, two things that can contribute to stringiness and limpness. We like the non-stripped feel we get from TRESemmé Purify & Replenish Shampoo and TRESemmé Purify & Replenish Conditioner. Rinse well, then towel-dry.

Moisturize your ends.

Smooth down the ends of your hair with some oil to keep them from splaying out.

Start a French braid.

Grip the hair from your hairline/fringe section, and begin a French braid from your partline outwards.

Gather hair into a high pony.

Incorporate the rest of your hair into your grip and gather all your strands into a high ponytail. You can adjust the height of your pony as you like, or as your neckline allows. Ed’s tip: We love a high ponytail for higher necklines, and a nape-hugging pony for deeper cuts.

Finish with hairspray.

A well-meaning spritz of hairspray, such as Suave Professionals Luxe Style Infusion Plump Hold Hairspray, helps seal in the look and keeps your hairstyle protected against any sudden winter winds. You’re done!
