Whether it’s a clubrat-inspired get-up (complete with elephant pants and candy necklace!) or a member of a ’90s girl group, space buns are a cute exclamation point to a retro-fab Halloween look. Basically a more simplified version of Bantu knots, space buns are simply regular chignons worn in multiples on the head for a funkier take on an updo. They’re snug and quirky—resembling little knobs on the head—and famously keep hair out of the face for hours on end, hence its popularity in the raver and electronica scenes. They’re also a great finishing touch on a multitude of costumes for Halloween. You can even wear them à la cat ears!
Without further ado, read on for a quick step-by-step guide to creating space buns for your next fun, quirky Halloween look.
Tutorial: Space Buns for Any Halloween Costume
Start on clean, freshly washed hair.
Prep hair by washing with a clarifying system. We like the non-stripped feel and moisturizing benefits we get from TRESemmé Purify & Replenish Shampoo and TRESemmé Purify & Replenish Conditioner. Afterwards, apply a moisturizing heat protectant, such as Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Heat Defense Leave-In Conditioner, then blow-dry until your hair is completely dry.
Part hair in the middle.
Using the end of a rat-tail comb, create a center part. Brush hair out thoroughly on each side to rid of any knots and tangles.
Create a bun with each pigtail.
Coil each pigtail around itself and secure the bun with bobby pins at the base. You may also opt to loop a hair elastic around the bun for a more snug feeling.
Secure and repeat.
Repeat the bun process on the opposite side. Secure with pins or a hair elastic near the base.
Done!
Mist your hair with a light spray of Dove Style+Care Extra Hold Hairspray for budge-free control, no matter how hard you hit the dancefloor (or how far your candy mission takes you this Halloween). You’re all set!
