Get a Head Start on Festival Season with this Grungy Boho Fishtail

Messy, but make it fashion.

Now that V-Day has come and gone, we’ve got another series of big weekends to look forward to: festival season. Yup, it’s that time of the year again, folks, where our best messy-cute looks are brought out and paraded onto the fore, dry shampoo comes raining down the heavens and our inner hippies can once again come out to play. And since that tired ol’ flower crown is so last decade, we’re now looking to the NYFW runways—from Rebecca Minkoff FW 2020, to be exact—for the latest in our fest-best inspiration. Welcome to the year of the boho fishtail, my friends.

Get ready to rock festival season with the boho fishtail braid.

This texturized, smudgy, and dare we say it, grungy take on the classic herringbone plait we know and love is a far cry from its Pinterested past; this time, the braid is micro-sectioned into wavy, staticky tresses and incorporated via ’90s-inspired staples like the half-updo and the side pony. “We wanted the braids and hair to feel disheveled and imperfect, as if it was slept on,” reiterates TRESemmé Global Stylist Justine Marjan. prep your boho fishtail braid
Prime your strands with some product before curling.

1. Prep hair with thickening spray.

The key to this tousled look? Texture, texture, texture. TRESemmé Volume Boost Spray spritzed all throughout locks helps impart some grit and volume onto strands, making them perfect for mussing up.

2. Loosely curl hair if desired.

Use a medium-barreled curling iron to create some beachy waves. Curl in alternate directions for a more natural look.

3. Flip hair to one side and leave out the fringe area of the hair.

4. Start a fishtail.

Split hair in half, then cross a small pinch of hair from one section over to the other section. Repeat on both sides till you see a familiar fishtail or herringbone pattern form as you braid downwards.

5. Secure with a hair tie.
