If you want to sweeten up your hair options, we’ve got you covered. This easy genie ponytail is effortlessly beautiful, and it’s a game-changer when a typical, dull “pony” won’t cut it. The best part? It is chic enough to wear it during cocktail hours, and totally appropriate for office meetings.
The ever-so-popular high genie ponytail doesn’t require complicated techniques, and although you can recreate it in literally seconds, we’re leveling up this ‘do by using a perfecting styling cream to smooth everything out as well as a flat iron to give your ends a fun, modern touch.
As your wish is our command, we’ll teach you how to do a genie ponytail step by step. Get ready a sky-high pony that’ll soon become your go-to style!
Prep your hair.
Working your way through damp hair, start by applying a product like TRESemmé One Step 5-in-1 Hair Smoothing Cream to perfect your tresses from root to ends. Its hybrid texture (a light-as-a-feather serum-cream combo!) will help you detangle and soften, all while protecting against heat damage and frizz.
Blow dry straight.
Take a paddle brush and blow dry your mane straight with continuous downward movements. To make things easier, blow dry your front pieces all the way to the back. By doing so, you’ll be “training” your hair in the direction of your high ponytail, especially if you’ve got a cowlick around the baseline.
Comb into a ponytail.
Once your hair is dry and smooth, comb it to the back and up towards the crown, making sure there aren’t any lumps or looseness around your head. Try to grab your ponytail with a firm grip while brushing.
Bring it to the top.
Bring your ponytail to the top of your head (as high as you can, depending on your length and likeness), and tightly pull it up before securing it with a hair tie.
To completely flatten and smooth out your sides, top, and bottom of your head, let’s apply TRESemmé One Step 5-in-1 Hair Smoothing Cream some more. Do it using your fingers toward the direction of your ponytail, that way you’ll be taming any frizz up to 48 hours as well as giving your ‘do an incredibly, natural sheen.
For thin baby hairs or annoying flyaways, we’ll comb the baseline to the back with a small brush (a toothbrush or a clean mascara wand would also work). Don’t be afraid to soak your brush in smoothing cream before combing – it will be an extra layer of protection and high glossy finish!
Glam up your pony.
Glam up the base of your ponytail by taking a quarter to an inch hair piece and wrap it around the elastic. Pull tight as you go, and tuck the ends into the tie or simply secure it with a bobby pin.
Perfect the ‘do.
We’re aiming for a buttery soft, frizz-free, shiny look from all angles, including the main showstopper! So, take a healthy dose of TRESemmé One Step 5-in-1 Hair Smoothing Cream and gently apply it downwards from the base to the ends of your high ponytail. This will also act as a heat protector, as you’ll be using a flat iron in the next step.
Flick the ends.
A genie ponytail wouldn’t be complete without a flirty flick! Use a size 1.25” flat iron to casually flip the ends up in modern way. There’s no technique here, simply twirl up as much as you want. You can even start bending from the middle of the pony for a more pronounced, fun flick.
Give your ponytail one last tight pull to get rid of any looseness and you’re good to go! Now it’s your turn to put your best face forward with classic accessories or a sweet, flirty makeup to steal the spotlight.
If you ever ask a hair goddess for three wishes, make this high genie ponytail one of them! Its simplicity surely makes it an option for a not-so-great-hair-day, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be a masterpiece when it’s time to take it up a notch.
