How to Keep Your Curls Overnight

Wake up with the loose curls of your dreams

For many of those on the type 3 and even type 4 curl spectrum, a lot of the time, second-day curls yield the best results. After a day of being worn in, your curls will be looser and give you “I woke up like this” vibes. But how can you ensure that you get “woke up like this” curls and not crimped or half-flattened curls? There are a few things you can do as you go to bed to help keep your curls overnight. Nobody is perfect and we have practically zero control while asleep, but these tips will put the odds in your favor for waking up with soft, beautiful waves.

The Best Way Keep Your Curls Overnight for Loose Waves in the Morning

Before your head hits the pillow you need to prep your hair. First, clean up your curls by finger-combing your strands. Brushing out your curls might seem counterproductive but it’s important to give them a quick comb to avoid knots from forming overnight. Do not use an actual brush to do this; it will be too much, and you will lose more shape than you want.

Use a small amount of hair oil on your curls to prevent them from getting dry and frizzy overnight. Nexxus Oil Infinite Nourishing Hair Oil is a great product for this because it’s light and helps reduce frizz and tame flyaways.

Now that you’re ready to hit the hay, it’s time to decide what to do with your hair! If you are a mover and shaker while you sleep then it’d be best to gently put your hair in a loose, low bun. Use a scrunchy or cotton headband to secure the bun. You don’t want to use an elastic as it will damage the follicle while you sleep. A low bun can help preserve your curls while you toss and turn throughout the night. If you are a still sleeper then you won’t cause much damage to your curls and can revive them with a few important products in the a.m.

One tip to keep your curls overnight that might sound a little odd: Keep your room at a cool temp while you sleep. If it’s too hot you will sweat out your curls and cause major bed head. Don’t make your room freezing or you’ll shiver to create body heat and still end up sweating out your curls. Find the right temp that will keep you cool, comfortable and sweat free.

Products to use in the morning

Once you wake up, it’s time to revive your curls for the day. Dry shampoo is a must for me personally; it soaks up any unwanted oil and gives my hair volume and life. Dove Refresh+Care Fresh Coconut & Hydration Dry Shampoo gives your hair a new lease on life and will amp up your curls if they need a little more oomph.

After your hair is rejuvenated, use a curler to retouch any curls that are too far gone. Finish with a good mist of TRESemmé Flawless Curls Hair Spray to define your curls and prevent frizz.
