Instagroom Day 16: How to Use Gel on Men’s Short Curly Hair
A men's curly hairstyle that's so simple: scrunch and go!
You Will Need
Here at All Things Hair, we’ve always thought that having curly hair was a blessing. Some born with it, however, may have faced certain challenges dealing with their hair type on occasion. And for those with men’s short curly hair, when it comes in a head-turning shade? Well, as today’s AXE Instagroom Jonah exclaims, “Growing up in the Nineties and Noughties with bright orange hair is the worst thing ever!”
Curls can be vulnerable to hot, humid weather or when styled with the wrong product. It tends to be the driest and most frizz-prone hair type, therefore finding the perfect balance between moisturized and volumized is the main concern. Once you’ve found the happy medium that gives your curls definition without the dreaded deflategate, you’re golden!
That said, our story with Jonah has a happy ending; a few scrunches of gel now have him loving his wild red hair. It’s amazing what a great cut can do with strands that have a bit of texture to it, not to mention how a bit of product know-how can change your life. And before you roll your eyes at the long, arduous process, chill out: Our friend here nails it in two minutes flat. Yep, scroll on to learn more:
How to Style Men’s Short Curly Hair
Start on damp hair.
For best results, wash hair with a moisturizing shampoo. We like the hydration offered by AXE Max Hydrate 2-in-1 Shampoo + Conditioner. Lather and rinse well.
Towel-dry.
Gently dry your hair with a towel. Be careful not to rub hair too vigorously, as this can cause damage and breakage, or even pouf out your curls even more.
Apply some gel.
Take a small amount of non-greasy gel, like AXE Urban Messy Look: Matte Hold Gel, onto your palms, and rub together. Tip: The amount you use largely depends on the thickness of your hair, so eyeball it reasonably. Thicker hair needs a bit more gel for hold, while finer, thinner hair can make do with around a dime-sized amount. For this look, Jonah used a matte gel — this gives a nice, textured structure without grease or shine.
Scrunch into hair.
Squeeze the product onto your ’do. Start with the fringe to define your hairline, then pat down the sides and back with any leftover gel. Use your fingers to point-style the tops of your bangs at an angle, if desired. Tip: Don’t overthink this! The best look is still one that has a bit of a bedhead feel.
Done!
You’re all set to rock your fresh look. When it comes to men’s short curly hair, it’s always a balance between casual and structured. Off you go!
