Tutorial: Polished Updo with a Bow

So charming and low-key festive.

What’s more inviting than presents ’round a Christmas tree? You, wearing a festive ribbon in your hair, naturally. It’s always super fun to inject some seasonally apropos themes into your holiday hairstyles, as long as they remain a subtle wink to the holiday spirit and not at all overdone—such as putting a cheery, holly-red ribbon on an updo with bow hairstyle. The result is tasteful and grown-up, and not at all campy.

This super-polished updo with bow is a prime example of the kind of easy glam that can work with any holiday occasion across the board. It’s a style that’s both quirky and elegant, and will keep you looking on-point at family get-togethers, office parties and even the NYE ball drop—as nothing gets in the way of that midnight kiss! Scroll down for an insanely quick how-to:

Tutorial: Polished Updo with Bow

Step 1: Start with clean, freshly washed hair.

Clean hair can provide some good traction and grip ideal for an updo with bow hairstyle. To start, wash hair with a gentle system that gives moisture and volume in one shot, such as Dove Oxygen Moisture Shampoo and Dove Oxygen Moisture Conditioner. Rinse thoroughly and towel-dry.

Step 2: Blow-dry your hair.

Spritz hair with a heat protectant and blow-dry with a hairdryer on a medium heat setting. We like the lightweight conditioning and protection we get from TRESemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray. Ed’s note: A paddle brush can help expedite the drying process!

Step 3: Flip hair over.

For the top knot novice, flipping your head over can help you gather hair into a high ponytail more efficiently. Position your ponytail high on your crown, and use a rat-tail comb to smoothen any bumps in the base.

Step 4: Create your chignon.

Twirl your ponytail into a firm rope, and begin coiling it around its own base. On your last “revolution,” fan some strands over the top of the knob to form a smooth cover on your bun. Secure with a hair tie or some bobby pins at the base. Ed’s tip: You might also want to employ the help of a hair donut for that full, rounded shape.

Step 5: Clip your bow.

Now for the pièce de résistance of your updo with bow: your ribbon! Clip your barrette on the back of your chignon—or tie an actual ribbon around your entire chignon for a more authentic feel.

Step 6: Finish with hairspray.

Smoothen down any halo frizz and flyaways, as well as keep your look budge-free, with some firm-hold hairspray. We love the control (and scent!) of TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Hold Hairspray.
