Hot Right Now: 10 Ways to Wear a Ribbon Hair Accessory

Runway-worthy pretty ribbons.

We loved checking out the latest hair trends from Fashion Month where we’ve seen everything from sleek and low ponytails to princess-inspired hairstyles to the revival of the ’70s style center part. Another favorite was the ribbon hair accessory that can do worlds of wonder to enhance your typically ponytails, braided hairstyles and top knots. The best part? They’re jaw droppingly easy-to-create. To help you get in on this trend, we’re sharing 10 cool ways how you can wear the awesome new ribbon hair accessory.

1. Low, Loose Ponytail

We’re starting you off with a easy one that’s equally chic. If you want to recreate this loose low ponytail, all you need is one hair tie and a ribbon of choice. For a smoother look, brush your hair backwards with a boar bristle brush and apply a dime-sized amount of serum to the base of your hair to tame any frizz. Secure your hair into a low pony with your hair tie and cover the hair tie with your hair ribbon. Done and done.

2. Elegant Chignon With Bow

For a slightly more pulled together version we suggest starting off with a silky straight blowout, and then using some of the TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Serum to ensure that your hair stays shiny and frizz-free. Then, pull all of your hair into a bun at the nape of your neck, hair net totally optional. With the section of hair you left out, wrap it around the base of the bun. Top the whole thing off with a mini black bow for an extra touch of sweetness.

3. ’70s Style Ponytail With Extra Large Bow

Like we said, ’70s hairstyles are back in action and looking pretty awesome with this modern iteration. To get this old meets new look, start off with a stick straight center part. Brush the hair on both sides of your head downwards and pull it into, you guessed it, a low ponytail. Cover this ponytail holder with an extra large velvet hair ribbon accessory as you show-off your hairstyle and keen fashion sense.

4. Woven Top Knot

Want a deceptively difficult-looking top knot? Try out this woven masterpiece. To start, you’ll need to DIY a little bit. To weave the ribbon through your hair with as much ease as possible, tie a ribbon that is approximately the length of your hair onto a hair tie. Then, pull all of your hair right on up into a super high ponytail, securing into place with that hair tie. Split your ponytail into two sections and braid, with the ribbon as the third section. When you’re done, wrap that braid around into a topknot and secure in place with bobby pins. We also like to give this style an extra support system with hairspray, like the Dove Style+Care Extra Hold Hairspray, should do the trick.

5. Half-up Beehive

This half-up beehive hairdo is perfectly matched with a cute bow. We love this voluminous half up style because it’s casual enough to wear anywhere but you still look super pulled together. Follow our tutorial for a half-up beehive hairstyle and finish the look by placing your ribbon on your head.

6. Voluminous Braid

Late mornings call for super easy, but still charming hairstyles. On days we’ve overslept we like to turn to braids. Just refresh your hair by spraying some of the Bed Head by TIGI Oh Bee Hive! Dry Shampoo that works to soak up the oils in your hair and provide your hair with massive body. Then, just create a simple three-strand side braid, securing a few inches from the ends of your hair. Then, to make it extra voluminous tug on the sections of the braid to loosen them up and create a wider look. Finish off the style by tying a ribbon hair accessory around the hair tie.

7. Lush Wavy Ponytail

Another second-day hairstyle that we just can’t get enough of is this wavy, low ponytail. We like to wear this style if we’ve curled our hair the day before. Loose, slightly fallen curls look gorgeous in a ponytail. Just pull back, secure with a hair tie and hair ribbon.

8. Ultra Sleek Low Ponytail

A similar, but totally different look is this tight and sleek ponytail. We like to start off a style like this by making sure the hair will be super smooth. Use the Nexxus New York Salon Care Humectress Encapsulate Serum on wet hair before blow drying straight. Finish straightening your hair with a flat iron to really get that sleek look. We like this tight ponytail tied up with an extra long hair ribbon, twisted around several times. It makes it less about the bow (or in this case, knot) and more about the ribbon itself.

9. Ribbon Headband

If all these low ponytails have you dying for any other style, no worries. You can wear a hair ribbon as a headband on pretty much any style you like! We’re particularly fond of popping on a ribbon headband on ballerina buns and cute ’50s inspired hairstyles.

10. Trailing Clip With Top Knot

Last, but obviously not least (actually, it may be the most!), is this gorgeous ribbon hair accessory that we’re sure we’ll be seeing at tons of weddings and formal events. With a simple and sleek top knot, you can wear just about any hair accessory you want. This clip says no more bows! It’s all about the glitz, glimmer, floral and woven ribbon elements. You can’t get much better than that!?
