5 Easy and Quick Summer Hairstyles for 2019

This might be our breeziest hair season yet.

Ah, summer—that much-awaited season of sea, sand, and surf, where the days are longer, the partying is stronger and everyone bids goodbye to the dreary winter days just passed. As any beauty junkie knows, the start of a hot new season also means it’s prime time for updating our looks via the trendiest Spring/Summer trends and, most significantly, some easy and quick hairstyles to set the tone for the coming year.

Apart from our trusty lip balms and bottles (upon bottles upon bottles) of SPF, the best summer beauty accessory everyone has is their hair.

Our manes take front and center during the warmer months—because of what better time to showcase our gorgeous natural texture or a banging new haircut, than when unencumbered by that wooly winter beanie?

Click through for a shortlist of our fave easy and quick hairstyles and post-hibernation haircuts, taken straight from the Spring/Summer 2016 trends:

Get Twisted

Pigtail French braids—and their badass cousin, the Dutch or boxer braids—have been taking real life (and social media) by storm.

If there’s one thing you take away from us, it’s that 2016 is the Year of the Braid. Categorically, across the board. Dutch, French, milkmaid, low-key, cornrow and all other versions of your beloved ’90s plait are now seeing a colossal renaissance both on haute couture catwalks and street style and beauty superstars. Lucky for us, we already have years of sleepovers and summer camp training up our sleeves to cop the look, whether you’re going for hippie baby braids, good-girl corporate plaits or a cool throwback French. Get creative with a hair tie and finish things off with a light-mist hairspray like Nexxus New York Salon Care Comb Thru Finishing Mist to keep things from unraveling.

Oh So Punny

The pun: Loop once, and you’re done.

You guessed it: the pun (ponytail-bun) is this year’s form of the sexy undone chignon. And yes, it does hark of a hurried post-Pilates hairstyle dressed up with a millennial name, but it’s the texture of the tresses that makes all the difference: whether silky, windswept or texturized, but all still dripping with an all-around relaxed vibe that most of us, gym bunnies or not, can relate to. A texturizing mousse such as TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Foaming Mousse keeps that half-up loop in place without sacrificing edge.

Accessories

And just in time for the music festivals too! If the gem-encrusted tiaras on the season’s catwalks were any indication, it’s that designers are indeed with us on this one. The runways didn’t scrimp on showcasing the fanciest hair accessories the season could offer, from florid hair brooches, gilded hair wreaths and straight-up floral crowns (#FestBest!). The humble headband also got a quick tune-up, where fun, graphic and bejeweled appliqués kept things in the sassier woke-up-like-this category. Styling-wise, we suggest giving your locks some grip via a hairspray like Dove Style+Care Flexible Hold Hairspray so as to not, cough, drop your crown.

Fringe Benefits

Probably one of the truest haircut updates of the season is the return of the fringe. Bangs always come out to play during the breezy summer months, and this year is no exception. Fuller, more retro fringes gave us serious shagadelic envy, while some gamines worked the opposite end of things with tiny baby bangs. Perhaps the fairest of them all was the fat fringe: Full but swept to one side, it was a look that kept us wanting to book that appointment once and for all. Whatever your length of choice however, keep things fresh and fluffy with a dry shampoo  such as TRESemmé Fresh Start Basic Care Dry Shampoo that battles humidity and sops up grease.

Straight and Narrow

Normcore girls, this is your moment: Never has straight hair been more in vogue than right now, where the trend for texture is apparently go straight or go home (to straighten some more). The baby fine smoothness was apparent on the catwalks, where lots of designers championed the wash-and-wear but where a sprinkling of staticky strands kept things more downtown. On the flipside, poker-straight also made the rounds and was the last word in sexy on some runways. Super-sleek-super-straight—basically all that we wish for from our flat irons, and then some. Middle parts and blunt ends were also called out, so we reckon a dollop of shine serum like Nexxus New York Salon Care Encapsulate Serum from lengths to ends is crucial to keeping ’round the bend.
