Tip 1: Pre-shampoo your hair.

There can be several stages of cleansing involved in natural hair. Many women with natural hair swear by a pre-shampoo process. During this process, you can use an oil (such as olive oil or coconut oil) to protect your strands before shampooing. This process helps protect hair especially during shampooing, which can strip your locks of natural oils. If you’re looking for a shampoo for natural hair, use this guide to help you find the right one for your hair type.

Tip 2: Deep-condition your hair.

One of our top natural hair care tips is incorporating a deep conditioner or mask into your weekly regimen. A deep conditioning treatment helps hydrate dry hair and encourages a smooth, frizz-free texture.

Tip 3: Oil your strands.

To nourish your strands, you can use Nexxus Oil Infinite Nourishing Hair Oil. This formula is infused with six oils, including Babassu and Marula oil, and helps repair hair’s lipid layer, as well as improves resilience and reduces frizz. This formula is lightweight enough to be used daily or weekly. You can use one of our favorite natural hair oils whenever you feel like you need some extra protection and moisture. Another great benefit of babassu oil for hair is that it also cleanses and hydrates the scalp.

Tip 4: Use leave-in conditioners.

Natural hair tends to be on the dryer side, emphasizing the need for moisture and proper hydration. Try Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Heat Defense Leave-in Conditioner to help keep hair frizz-free.

Tip 5: Stick with your key products.

Sometimes using too many products can wreak havoc on your strands. Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, like Dove Absolute Curls Shampoo and Dove Absolute Curls ConditionerThe formula in this wash-and-care system cleanses, conditions, strengthens and nourishes.

Tip 6: Try not to use too much heat to style.

If you’re on a healthy hair journey, stay away from heat-styling as much as possible and air-dry your hair whenever you can. If you have to use a blow-dryer or flat iron, be sure to protect your strands with a heat protectant, like Dove Style+Care Smooth & Shine Heat-Protection Spray

Tip 7:  Teasing hair may cause damage.

It may be tempting to tease to get volume, especially when you’re adding volume to your wash-and-go styles, but this may cause tangles and damage if done incorrectly or too often. Here’s a guide to help you learn how to tease your hair at home.

Tip 8: Don’t pull or tug your hair when detangling.

Too much tugging or pulling at your hair will cause it to break or split. Be kind to your locks by wearing a protective (non-elastic) hair tie or scarf. If you wear a wrap or scarf, be sure not to tug too hard at the root. When detangling your hair, use a detangling brush or a wide-tooth comb and detangle from the ends up. Read our guide for detangling hair with ease.

Tip 9: Protect hair at night.

Even your strands need some rest. At night, use a silk scarf or sleep on a silk pillowcase. This helps protect your locks from breakage. Silk also helps you retain moisture in your hair while you sleep and minimizes friction against the hair strand!
