How to style a Mohawk

Tutorial: How to Create a Mohawk or Fohawk at Home

Add some length to your hair with a fohawk.

You’re an edgy dude, but not that edgy. You know your limits when it comes to styling your hair, even though you like to try new things (ever so slightly, of course). One style that might tap into your edgy yet sensible side is the fohawk. An iteration of its rebellious cousin, the mohawk, the fohawk involves a look where the hair is slightly gelled upward and/or buzzed or tapered slightly on the sides. A modern style for men, we’ve seen this look everywhere, from the boardroom to our local coffee shop. Even though it looks simple, it can sometimes be more complicated, especially if it’s your first creating this ‘do. No need to stress; we have you covered in our guide so that you can create your very own fohawk. Plus, some of our favorite products that’ll proudly make your ‘hawk stick straight up.

Step 1: Score the right cut

Before you move your hair in any direction, you’ll need to score the right cut. This starts by asking for more length on your crown to ensure that you have sufficient hair to spike upwards. You’ll also need to figure out the sides of your hair and whether you want a tapered look or buzzed sides.

Step 2: Shampoo and condition your hair

If you already have the desired look, make sure that you start by creating your look with a clean head of hair. Use a wash and care system like the Dove Men+Care Oxygen Fresh & Clean Fortifying 2-in-1 Shampoo + Conditioner, making sure to give your head a gentle massage as you work in the 2-in-1 solution.

Step 3: Towel dry your hair

You’ll need your hair to be dry to create this look. After you shampoo and condition your hair, be sure to dry it completely with a towel and blowdryer, if necessary.

Step 4: Get the right products

For spiky hair, use some hair gel or pomade, which has a stickier hold. Work a dollop of the Axe Smooth Look: Shine Pomade into your hair, creating length and a defined structure to your hair.

Step 5: Work your hair

Place the gel or pomade into your hand, ensuring that you have equal parts product to the amount of hair you want in a fohawk. Work with the product and your hair texture and length to create a full-on spiked look or something subtle. Pay attention to the front for whatever length you are going for so that it stands up straight.

Step 6: Finger-comb your hair upward

After you work the product throughout your hair, use your fingers to massage your locks, ensuring they work upwards into a triangle shape.

Step 7: Blow-dry your hair in place

To make sure your style stays put, use a blow dryer to seal your Bed Head for Men By TIGI Power Play Firm Finish Gel in place. Using a small amount of heat can help to maintain this look even longer.

Once you have applied heat to your fohawk, ensure it all stays put by applying some Dove Style + Care Extra Hold Hairspray to your strands.
