Helmut Lang Reimagines Film Noir Hair for NYFW S/S 2018
If you’ve ever found yourself riveted by the dark aesthetics and twisted plot devices in a film noir, then the appeal of Helmut Lang’s latest S/S 2018 show should come as no surprise. The collection’s neo-futuristic silhouettes—part bondage, part club kid, all neutral—called to mind some serious Eurogoth along with the sci-fi feel of rain-slicked alleys. And at the heart of it all is the token femme fatale, the beloved anti-heroine that provided much of the backstage inspiration for the show. TRESemmé NYFW Stylist Holli Smith modernized the character for the designer by reimagining the film noir hair concept—typically blown out to perfection and styled in lush, side-parted curls—for Gen Z, a.k.a. giving models a wet finish, a one-sided curl and a tight, twisted bun. Set off by luminescent skin and brick red lips, and well, you’ve got looks to kill. Scroll on for a step-by-step:
Modern Film Noir Hair at Helmut Lang S/S 2018
Step 1: Start by washing your hair with TRESemmé Repair & Protect 7 Shampoo and Conditioner. Follow up with a spritzing of TRESemmé Repair & Protect 7 Pre-Styling Spray to prime and protect locks for heat styling.

Step 2: To give a bit of structure to your strands, apply a small dollop of TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Hold Mousse through damp hair before blow-drying.
Step 3: Part your hair in the middle. Take the front section of hair before the ear on the left side and clip away to keep separate (Ed’s note: This will serve as your curl.).
Step 4: Spread on a dime-sized amount of TRESemmé Beauty-Full Volume Hair Maximizer and TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Firm Control Gel all over the back section of your hair to provide a sleek finish. Pull into a medium-height ponytail, just right above your skull bump. Secure with a hair elastic.
Step 5: Do a rope twist on your entire pony and coil it around into a clean, tight bun. Secure with French pins at the base.
Step 6: Using a fine-toothed comb, comb the front section of hair forward. Curl with a curling iron to create that definitive film noir hair wave. Note: You can also use the pin-curl method for a more vintagey touch, via small hair clips zigzagging down the section.
Step 7: Tightly twist the section of hair along the front left hairline. Secure in front of the ear with a tiny elastic.
Step 8: Finish off with TRESemmé TRES Two Extra Hold Hairspray, matting down any hairline frizz and flyaways as needed.
