Tutorial: How to Make a Easy Ponytail with a Twisted Pouf

Zero to a hundred in a few easy steps.

Not to reinvent the wheel here, but finding ways to spruce up an everyday look is one of the best things about being a beauty editor. Take your basic easy ponytail, for example: It’s functional and can get you from work to working out to weekday happy hour in two twists of the wrist. But a few deliberate tweaks here and there? Ah, now you’re in fashun territory, and there are few things more chic and stylish than a thought-out hairdo.

If you’re anything like us, then you know that it’s all in the details. Infusing a little more pomp, such as a pouf or a twist, into your regular easy ponytail can be all that’s standing between a no-nonsense, vanilla updo and a dramatic red carpet-ready look. Read on:

Easy Ponytail Upgrade: The Twist and Pouf

1

Start with clean hair.

Twisted hairstyles, especially updos, look especially pristine when done on silky hair. Wash hair with a shine and volume-infusing shampoo and conditioner like TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Shampoo and TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Conditioner

Spray on some volumizer.

Infuse your strands with a bit more lift with a volumizing spray like Dove Oxygen Moisture Root Lift Spray. This product will target limp-prone areas such as the root, temples and crown.

Curl your hair.

Lightly coat your hair with some of Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Heat Defense Leave-in Conditioner. Then, rough-dry your hair with a blowdryer until it is 90 percent dry, part hair in the middle and curl hair. If you have longer hair, you can use a 1 1/2″ barrel curling iron for bigger, looser curls. Shorter hair can do with thinner barrels.

Section hair.

Using a fine-toothed or fishtail comb, separate the two front sections of hair.

5

Twist and clip.

Twirl each section around itself and clamp off with a duckbill clip.

6

Backcomb the crown.

Tease the hair at the crown of your head, backcombing from top to bottom till you create some fuzz.

7

Refine with a comb.

Using a fine-toothed comb, smoothen down your pouf by gently (and somewhat shallowly) combing the regular way, from front to back.

8

Make a ponytail.

Gather the loose hair into a low ponytail. Secure with a hair tie.

9

Tease the tail.

Backcomb the hair in your ponytail for some added texture. Be gentle!

10

Free your side-twists.

Remove the duckbill clips on either side of your head. Re-twist them if necessary.

Wrap each around your pony.

Twist each section towards the center and wrap the sections around the base of your ponytail.

Secure twists with pins.

Affix the twists around your ponytail with some cleverly concealed bobby pins.

Done!

Dust on a light spritz of hairspray like Nexxus New York Salon Care Frizz Defy Finishing Mist to fortify that baby pouf and smooth down any frizz around the hairline. You’re good to go!
