An Editor’s Straight Hair Routine for Natural Hair
Say hello to your new hair care routine.
When I transitioned from relaxed to natural, my biggest concern was heat damage from styling and how I would be able to keep my hair smooth when I wore it straight. Needless to say, it took a bit of trial and error. Eventually, I found the products that helped me maintain straight hair for more than two weeks and created my very own straight hair routine for natural hair.
If you’re in need of a hair care and styling regimen for straightening natural hair, you’re in for a treat. There are some products that I have used that can be helpful with keeping your hair straight for longer periods of time. Read on to see what worked for me and try them out too.

1.Use a wash and care system formulated to keep hair smooth.
When hair care brands advise that your wash and care system plays a huge role in how your hair comes out after washing and styling, it isn’t a marketing gimmick. Whenever I know I am straightening my hair, I use either Nexxus Oil Infinite Shampoo and Nexxus Oil Infinite Conditioner or Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Shampoo and Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Conditioner. Both of these hair care systems help keep strands smooth.
2. Use dry shampoo to refresh hair.
Dry shampoo is a total game-changer for keeping your hair looking like it has been freshly done. My go-to is the Dove Refresh+Care Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo. Whenever my straight hair looked limp, or clammy due to product buildup, I would spray it on my roots and brush it through to refresh my hair. Adding a dry shampoo to your hair will prevent from having to wash your hair after the first week.
3. Use a heat protectant that also helps retain moisture.
Not all heat protectants are made equal. Some are created to withstand heat but doesn’t do a great job of keeping your hair’s moisture levels balance. The formulas that helps hair retain moisture post wash are ideal for people with naturally dry hair. TRESemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray has been a staple in my straight hair routine for natural hair for years and it has never failed me. This heat protectant was formulated to stands up to flat and curling irons, leaving hair shiny and enviably soft and the moisture-locking vitamin complex keeps your hair moisturized.
