Should I get bangs? From Bardot to Birkin, find your perfect bangs look, here!

Should I get bangs? Great question. As with many big decisions, sometimes you need a little time to reflect and question whether you are doing the right thing – and the same goes for our style choices (we already have too many to regret!).

With the likes of Elizabeth Olsen and Shailene Woodley making a strong case for the fringe, are you now dead set on getting bangs, too? Well, before you take the plunge there are a few things you should ask yourself. And after that, if you feel ready, we have shortlisted the latest fringe hairstyles to help inspire your next look.

Should I get bangs? 5 things to consider

1. Why do you want them?

First things first, why do you want to get bangs right now? Are you looking for a hair overhaul after a major life event ( a break-up, for example)? Or, has your favourite celebrity got a fringe style you completely adore?

Or, maybe your questioning ‘should I get bangs?’ before a special occasion (be it graduation or a wedding). If so, do you want to look back and be reminded how that split decision to get bangs should have been given another thought? Moral of the story: be 100% sure you want them.

2. Prepare yourself for the maintenance

Perhaps the most important thing to know when it comes to bangs is that they are quite needy and require a fair amount of attention, depending on which type of fringe you go for. And, if you want them to look red carpet-worthy, be prepared to spend time caring for them. Which bring us unto the next part…

To keep them looking their best, you may be required to get your fringe trimmed as often as every 3-6 weeks, as they will grow faster than you expect. If you want to avoid that awkward in-between time, getting regular cuts is all you need to help you maintain your bangs length and shape.

TONI&GUY Instant Refresh Dry Shampoo

Editor’s tip: If there’s one product that’ll make maintaining your bangs easy, it’s dry shampoo. Our favourite? The TONI&GUY Instant Refresh Dry Shampoo, of course.

Not only will this nifty product do a great job keeping grease at bay (which is another issue you’ll be dealing with if you decide to get bangs!), but it will also revive them and keep them in tip-top shape in-between washes.

3. Figure out what suits your face shape

Now, it’s all well and good looking at your fave celebrities for inspiration, but just because your favourite one looks amazing with a blunt fringe, doesn’t mean it will necessarily work for you. This is why its essential to know what your face shape is before taking the plunge.

See our guide on how to match bangs to your face type here.

Also, why not play around with faux bangs and different fringe styles using clip-ins – Gigi Hadid does, after all?

4. Consider your hair type

Like all hairstyles, bangs need to work with your unique hair type. This may mean that the fringe style you have your heart set on won’t work for you, but there’s no need to fret: just look for celebrities who have the same hair texture as you, and see how they pull off bangs.

Whether you’ve got fine, straight hair or thick, curly hair, we promise there are a rainbow of fringe choices you can pick from.

5. How will it affect your normal routine

If you’re the type to hit snooze 6 times or barely have a moment to yourself after getting the kids ready for school each morning, you may need to consider if you even have time to prim and prep your bangs.

But it doesn’t stop there, oh no. Are you a gym bunny? If you like all your hair to be out of your way while getting your sweat on, take a moment to think on how you plan to secure your bangs for that gym sesh.

Now, if after questioning ‘should I get bangs?’ and deciding that you do want, you’ll need some inspiration to find the ideal style for you. Lucky for you, we’ve detailed the bangs styles are trending in 2019.

1. Hepburn

Best for: Those who are always one step ahead of the trends.

From Emma Watson to Lizzy Caplan, Hepburn bangs are the latest bangs gaining popularity. These short bangs are brushed forward and then swept softly to the side, much like how Audrey Hepburn wore her bangs in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

2. Birkin

Best for: Lovers of Parisian styles.

Named after the iconic look worn by model Jane Birkin in the ’60s, Birkin bangs are wispy and full of texture. The best way to show them off? By pulling the length of your hair back into a casual ponytail and letting them take centre stage, like Elizabeth Olsen has done.

4. Curly bangs

Best for: Curly haired ladies.

We’re sure that when you were considering ‘should I get bangs?’, you didn’t think that curly bangs would be one of the top bangs for 2019. Stemming from the popular shag haircut, curly tresses with bangs are a match made in hair heaven.

Best for: Nervous newbies, as you can grow this style out quite easily.

In our opinion, Bardot bangs kicked off the return of the fringe in so many ways. Turning to style icons and muses of yesteryear (Birkin, Hepburn & Bardot), everyone from Georgia May Jagger and Felicity Jones have been spotted wearing the style. Will you be next?
