Picture the scene: it’s 1967 and you and your friends have just landed in San Francisco to the social phenomenon dubbed the Summer of Love. The mass of free-spirited festival goers are looking every inch as cool as you imagined, with tie-dye t-shirts and hippie hairstyles, but you’ve rocked up in your fresh-off-the-flight messy bun and need a new ‘do to help you blend in (no one likes to be the new kid in class do they?).

Now fear not, as we have your ideal look well and truly covered. From simple hair updates (hello flower crown) to Instagram worthy braids, these hippie hairstyles are perfect whether you want to embrace your inner boho queen for your big day or need a fun new style for a summer festival!

1. Flower crown

Naturally, we had to kick things off with a flower crown as no hippie hairstyles roundup would be complete without one.

Not just a great free-spirit hairstyle, flower crowns will also fit right in at a bohemian-inspired wedding or summer garden party. There’s nowhere this look can’t take you! Credit: @dreamymakeovers

2. Hippie hair wrap

Anyone who has strolled along the beachfront while on holiday will have comes across those hair stalls offering braids, seashell accessories and the like. And while we never went for the full Monica Geller in Barbados braids (“it’s the humidity”) we have definitely added colourful hair wraps around our strands.

Why? Besides showing it off to our schoolmates of course, it’s the perfect accessory to give tresses a cool hippie look. Credit: @sammiejosephene

3. Half-up braids

Want to show off your long tresses while displaying your braiding skills? Then we think this hippie-inspired ‘do is great for you.

While this Instagrammer has added a selection of rope twists, pancaked fishtail braids and simple three-strand plaits, the key to this look is more around creating texture and a tousled finish. Credit: @jamienkidd

Editor’s tip: For effortless undone styles with texture, reach for the VO5 Dry Texturising Spray. We recommend using this product on dry hair only, scrunching in the product as you spray or for added lift spray directly on the roots.

4. Space buns

The hit hairstyle for festivals, space buns can be given a hippie overhaul with a few simple tweaks. Try adding beads, feathers and a variation of flowers for a fun and playful finish. Credit: @hotboxsalon

6. Beach waves

When looking through the hippie hair archive, there is no denying that tousled wavy hair is a must.

If your hair is Rapunzel length you can simply leave your beach waves as is, but for shorter styles, we suggest adding a complimenting accessory like this Instagrammer’s crystal and pearl headband. Credit: @i.tupfelchen.brautaccessoires

Editor’s tip: For rough texture and tousled waves without a crunchy feel, simply spray the TONI&GUY Sea Salt Texturising Spray over damp or dry hair.

8. Turbans

Less fortune teller and more Olsen twins, turbans are a stylish addition to every hippie’s hair wardrobe. A turban headband can be used to give tresses a fast update and, best of all, when the weather turns cold you’ll have warm snuggly ears. Credit: @hairbyataylor
