Go into the future with these throwback 90s styles
Between grunge outfits, classic preppy looks and the hair that went with them, there’s no denying that 90s fashion was a vibe. Which is why it’s now impossible to scroll through TikTok or Instagram without spotting some throwback 90s styles (we see you).
So to give you a head start with some throwback 90s hairstyles, we’ve put together a list of some iconic styles to top off your 90s inspired look.
1. Blunt cut
If you’re looking for a “starter kit” 90s style, this blunt cut is where to start. It’s perfect if you’re thinking of cutting your hair or already have a bob cut. The super sharp, clean edges is what makes this style the perfect chic 90s look.
2. High braids
High braids were a truly 90s style. This braided look was seen in popular street styles and on celebs like Janet Jackson at the time. If you’re looking for something versatile and that will make you stand out from the crowd, these 90s inspired braids are a must.
3. The pixie
Another style that was strutted by a number of celebrities in the 90s was this pixie cut. This hairstyle led to the awakening of the short, spunky styles that we now love so much. The pixie cut can be worn straight and sleek for a more chic vibe or spiked up for a more casual textured look.
If you’re going the spiked up route, use some of the VO5 Extra Body Styling Mousse to create volume and hold on your pixie style.
4. Tiny braids
Another uniquely 90s style that is definitely making a comeback is the tiny braids look. To get the look all you need to do is create very small, thin braids. Since the braids are so tiny, they end up looking like a thicker strand of your hair — allowing you to tie and twist as you please to create a bunch of looks from this one hairstyle.
5. Chilled 90s curls
If you’ve got natural curls or you frequently curl/perm your hair, this 90s style is a classic that needs to be tried. Fluff up your curls and gently run your fingers through the length so that your curls are slightly looser. This will create that casual 90s street style that pairs perfectly with a T-shirt and a pair of jeans.
To keep your curls moisturised and strong, prep your hair with the TRESemmé Botanic Nourish & Replenish Shampoo and Conditioner.
6. The Rachel
An absolute must-have on any 90s styles list has to be Jennifer Aniston’s “Rachel” hairstyle from Friends. Friends became huge in the mid-90s, which resulted fan-favourite character Rachel Green’s hairstyle becoming iconic. This layered, bouncy cut was tried by many fans, with its real selling point being that it was simple and looked good on almost everyone.
7. 90s hair accessories
If you really want to embrace your inner 90s fashionista, hair accessories must to be used! Butterfly clips, tiny head bands, hair jewels, colourful snap clips…need we say more? There are so many fun and cutesy 90s hair accessories (now available in stores) to be added to your look. One of our personal favourite hair looks is a halo of snap clips at the front of your hair — the ultimate accessorised 90s style.
8. The outward flip
Another classic that is undeniably 90s is the outward flip at the end of a straight bob. All it takes is a round blow dry brush and some heat to curl the bottom of your bob upwards. This look is not only really easy to create, but is the perfect hairstyle to top off a retro 90s look.
To finish off the style, give your hair a spray with the TONI&GUY Finishing Shine Spray.
