Men's haircare: Avoid tight hats

Men’s winter haircare tips and essentials

Winter weather can be pretty harsh on hair. From the cold air to icy winds, the transition from one season to the next can sometimes leave your hair prone to breakage and lacking moisture.

As a starting point we’ve put together a few men’s winter haircare tips and some essential products that will help you protect your hair from the cold during the winter months.

Wash your hair with moisturising products

Because the winter air can steal moisture from your hair, you will need to add a moisturising shampoo and conditioner to your winter haircare routine to give it the extra boost it needs.

The Dove Nutritive Solutions Daily Moisture Shampoo & Conditioner or if you prefer a 2in1, the Dove Daily Moisture 2in1 Shampoo are great options. Each is designed to gently cleanse and nourish your hair, while still maintaining its natural moisture.

Use lukewarm water when washing

Although it may be tempting to have a super hot shower when it’s cold outside, this doesn’t always benefit your hair. Hot water can be too harsh on your scalp and hair. Just like heat styling, the excessive heat from the water can get rid of your natural oils and weaken your strands — which is not what you need in your winter haircare routine. Instead, wash your hair with lukewarm water in winter, this will still cleanse your hair without being too harsh.

Add a hair treatment to your haircare routine

Even if you’re washing your hair with moisturising products, adding an extra dose of hydration will only benefit your winter haircare. Using a deep treatment mask once a week can help to supplement any moisture lost during those cold days. Plus, any natural oils in a deep treatment mask will help to hydrate your scalp and prevent dandruff (which can be super annoying in winter).

Two of our fave hair treatments are the TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Deep Smoothing Mask and the Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque (great for natural and curly hair). Using either one of these once a week will up the moisture levels in your hair and smooth your strands — because winter flyaways are not cute on anyone.

Dry it with care

When your hair is wet it is even more sensitive, which is why you need to make sure to dry your hair with care. A top men’s winter haircare tip is to invest in microfibre towel. This will help you to gently dry your hair and reduce any friction against your hair.

Some other drying options you could try are to use your hands to shake off water from your hair and let it air dry or to use a hair dryer on a very low setting to slowly (and gently) dry your hair.

Avoid very tight beanies or hats

Cold months are the perfect time for warm, wooly hats and beanies… but if they’re too tight, they could have negative effects on your hair. Tight beanies or hats can cause friction on your hair. And even weaken your strands when pulling the hat on and off. To make sure this doesn’t happen to you, choose beanies or hats that have a looser fit. These will be wayyy better for your winter haircare.

Trim your hair regularly

Last but not least, regularly trimming your hair is a men’s haircare must in winter. The cold weather can cause your ends to split — even when you have short hair! Because of this, you want to go for regular trims at your barber or a salon. This will help get rid of split ends and keep your hair looking full and healthy.
