Get your grooming game down by mastering these simple steps.

Short hairstyles and looks are super trendy these days now that the heat is on, and more and more dudes are making the cut. The only caveat: The best male grooming habits require that shorter hair gets some tending-to on the daily. After all, unlike longer styles, you can’t just loop that quiffy ‘do a man bun whenever the mood strikes, or whenever you want some ~space~ from your pomade.

We asked stylist Julie Pope to help us with the best (and fastest) way to spiff up short hair with product. Hopefully this helps streamline your morning process and get rid of your bad hair days, once and for all! Read on:

Male Grooming 101: How to Style Short Hair

1

Start on clean, freshly washed hair.

Start in the shower. Rinse hair with a zesty clarifying product to rid hair of grease and buildup (we like the zing from the menthol and caffeine in Dove Men+Care Fresh & Clean Fortifying 2-in-1 Shampoo + Conditioner). Towel-dry at first, then dry completely using a blowdryer on a medium heat setting. Tip: Concentrate the nozzle at the root of your hair, and use a brush (and not just your fingers) to direct the airflow upwards. This will help create a uniform lift and volume.

2

Apply some gel.

Take a dime-sized amount of gel — we like the firm yet precision hold of Bed Head for Men by TIGI Power Play — and rake it through once to coat the entire crown. Blast shortly with a blowdryer to give it more grip, then start refining the top, sides and back with any leftover product. Stylist Julie Pope recommends giving your roots a gentle tug or scrunch, then wiggling fingers upward so your strands get some texture. She also says that with short hair, it’s more flattering not to slick it back: When you’re in profile (aka side view), your face and hair should be in a straight line to mimic fullness and give your features more definition.

Done!

Mat down any cowlicks on the back of your hair, and you’re all set!
