Thomas Osborn Creates “Desert Hair” for Jonathan Simkhai SS17

Alyssa François | 13 September 2016

Dry hair is the new black.

The wavy hair trend is still going strong for New York Fashion Week, and as we predicted, braided hairstyles will yet again be in rotation for SS2017! The wavy desert hair looks created for Jonathan Simkhai, however, has an unusual yet creative spin.

Drawing inspiration from deserts and beaches, some models were laced with cornrow braids that were weaved with colorful threads, and accessorized with beadwork for a modern twist, while others received peek-a-boo braids with wavy hair on the dry and matte end of the spectrum.

According to Thomas Osborn TIGI US Creative Director, the hairstyle is “natural-looking with an element of dry-roughness.” As moisturized hair advocates, we were curious to know how can one actually make dry, desert hair look chic! Read on to find out how Thomas Osborn and the TIGI team created desert hair for NYFW.

“All of the girls are going with center parts. The idea is that it’s much looser— not a whole lot of shine to it. We’re not adding hair for length, we added more for thickness and fullness. It’s not meant to look super polished,” Osborn explains.

So how does the stylist make dry hair look cool? When asked how the texture is created, Thomas explains “We’re running a little bit of the Catwalk by TIGI Hairista to the ends so it’s almost like that girl that’s been tanning in the sun and the ends of her hair has been soaked up by the ocean.”

Next Summer, channel the desert hair looks from Johnathan Simkhai’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection. After catching a few waves in the ocean, embrace your beach hair texture but go easy on the oil — or just leave it in your beach bag! If you’d like to try something a little more challenging, create cool cornrow braids and adorn them with funky threads and beads.
