We’re officially kicking off the holiday season with none other than YouTube darling Zoella, who talks us through how she does her trademark curls on medium-length hair. She starts the curly hairstyles installment of the Style It On series by showcasing a look that’s perfect for all kind of holiday festivities (and on any other time of the year, really).
Whether you’re ice-skating in the park, rockin’ around the Christmas tree with your #squad or hanging out under the mistletoe with your sweetie, these fun, flirty curls are guaranteed to warm the heart of any scrooge. Go on and style it on!
Tutorial: Flirty, Party-Ready Curls for the Holidays
Towel-dry your hair after rinsing. Apply a puff of mousse (around the size of a small tangerine) onto the palm of your hand. Spread it onto your strands, using a comb for an even application, if necessary. Like Zoella, we like the smooth, defined control (and divine scent!) we get from the Catwalk by TIGI Strong Hold Mousse.
Blow-dry your hair.
Blow-dry your hair on a medium setting until strands are 90% to completely dry.
Section hair off with a scrunchie!
Zoella likes sectioning hair off with an old-school tool: the scrunchie, as it “doesn’t leave dents in your freshly washed hair.” Starting from the bottom up, proceed to put hair up in sections, depending on your length and thickness.
Using a 1 1/4″ curling wand or iron, proceed to twirl hair around the barrel, leaving an inch of hair free on the ends for a more natural look. Leave on for around 8 to 10 seconds (more or less, depending on how much strands your hair can tolerate), then uncurl.
Repeat on all sections.
Repeat the curling process on all sections.
Reverse the curl
For more “definition and texture,” Zoella suggests “going the opposite way, every now and then.” To achieve, reverse the twirl of every other section for sexier, more natural spirals.
Do the hairline last.
Curl the hairline or fringe area last (and away from the face, as is more flattering).
Shake them out.
After you’ve finished curling all your sections, carefully separate each spiral with your fingers for a more tousled look.
Gather hair off to one side.
Carefully gather all sections and bring hair over one shoulder.
Secure with some bobby pins.
Affix bobby pins behind the head, towards the neckline, for a cute, one-sided look to your curls.
Now, go and rock your newly-created curls with confidence!
