Hair Truth or Myth: If I Pull Out 1 Grey Hair, Will 2 Grow In Its Place?

Could plucking out stray grey hairs be causing more harm than good? We wanted to find out.

We’re all guilty of plucking the odd stray so let’s put this to bed once and for all. We’re pleased to announce this is a myth!

If you lose a hair, only one can be produced in its place from the same follicle. This means one grey hair won’t come back as two and we can all sleep a little easier at night now.

However, this doesn’t mean new grey hairs aren’t growing at the same time (sorry!). We have up to 150,000 follicles on our head, so this is pretty likely.

Editor’s tip: Thinking about embracing the grey? To keep your grey hair looking radiant and not brassy, we recommend adding a purple shampoo into your hair care routine. The Dove Silver Care Shampoo and Conditioner are tailored for ageing hair and contain pearl extract and violet toning pigments to brighten your colour and enhance shine.
