Style it the classic way

Quiffs have been around since the 1950s, but the classic look still feels as fresh and modern today as it did back then. Work this timeless hairstyle by requesting your barber for a cut that’s clean and well-balanced to give you a sharp, well-honed look. Keep a little length on the back and sides, if you wish, but make sure the top part of your hair is quite a bit longer to help create that more dramatic quiff shape.

Editor’s tip: use the VO5 Groomed Styling Wax (£2.99*) to help manipulate and hold your hair into in the desired sculpted shape.

Short-haired quiffs

While a little length is definitely necessary to achieve the look, if you have shorter hair and fancy playing with quiffs, it’s certainly not impossible. The results won’t be quite as voluminous or dramatic as a classic Teddy Boys version, but why not focus on creating a bit of texture – by working the VO5 Thicken Up lifting Paste (£3.99*) through top part of your hair for a messier, more casual-looking outcome.

Editor’s tip: to further define and accentuate the look, opt for an undercut, but if a more subtle look is what you’re after, go for a tapered fade, instead.

Long-haired quiffs

If you’re rocking a longer hairstyle, then the good news is you can get more creative when it comes to styling quiffs. Having longer hair on top allows you to play with creating more volume, adding texture and transforming your look completely. However you style it, it’s a good idea to blow-dry your quiff into shape.

Start with damp hair, work a small amount of TIGI Bed Head For Men Slick Trick Pomade (£13.95*) through it, before using your hair dryer and a fine brush to create the shape you’re after. This will give you a sleek, shiny result with a good, strong hold that looks both neat and stylish.

Contemporary textured quiffs

While a longer top and shorter sides are essential to achieving the classic quiff look, the more extreme the difference between these two can promote a more exaggerated and interesting result. Modern quiffs incorporate all styles, from perfectly sculpted, high-precision flicks that are perfectly sculpted, to rough and ready styles that exude a laid-back confidence. Accentuate this look by asking your barber for extremely short back and sides, as the distinguished contrast will better showcase your quiff in a more dramatic fashion.

Invest in the right products

However you style your quiff, having the right products will make it that much easier. A good pomade worked through damp hair (and blow-dried) will give you the right foundation to create a well-sculpted look with a firm, long-lasting hold and shine, while a dab of styling wax or medium-hold paste can help boost texture for a more casual outcome.
