So, if you’re binge watching season 5 or just want a new way to style your lengthy locks, the good news is: you can check out our favourite Vikings-inspired bro-styles, here!
Hairstyles that would make any Viking proud
The classic man bun hairstyle
We couldn’t possibly put together a rundown of Vikings-inspired hairstyles without including the classic man bun. After all, nothing says Vikings like long hair tied into a high topknot! So when we spotted this updo, we knew it had to make our list! Credit: @itsdavisneilands
Editor’s tip: Keep your man bun ultra cool and casual by applying the VO5 Extreme Surf Style Paste to your lengthy locks. It’ll give your hair a beachy aesthetic with a touchable feel.
Take a leaf out of character Björn Ironside‘s (Alexander Ludwig) book with this braided man bun. A little heads up: this hairstyle is probably one of the more trickier man bun ‘dos because of the Dutch braid on top.
But if you can manage to weave it, you’ll have a strong and bold look (much like Björn!). Credit: @growupleo
The half-up bun
What do you do when you’re bored of your classic man bun? Try your hand at the half-up bun (AKA the hun). It’s a favourite ‘do of character Rollo (Clive Standen) and works really well if you have lots of hair and want to show off the texture of your mane. Credit: @zphill_219
Editor’s tip: Don’t worry too much if you don’t have naturally thin hair, you just as easily get the look with the VO5 Extreme Style Casual Control Dry Texture Spray. Just blast your mane with the spray for instant texture and don’t stress about the finish: it’s matt and non-crunchy.
Like the idea of the Dutch braid, but don’t want to feature your plait prominently on the top of your head? Then meet the discreet, side braid version. This ‘do subtly moves the plait to the side for providing a playful, man bun refresh.
Beard with undercut
What do you do when you can’t choose between the man bun and an undercut? Just combine the two, of course!
This man bun undercut is inspired by the great king Ragnar Lothbrok (ex Calvin Klein model Travis Fimmel) and a great option if you have thick hair. Why, you wonder? Because the undercut will literally cut your hair in half! Credit: @robingustavgillis
Editor’s tip: Just apply a little styling pomade, like the TIGI Bed Head for Men Slick Trick Pomade, as this will help hold you bun in place, while simultaneously giving it a nice shine.
We like to think of this as ‘date night’ Viking, as it’s rather more groomed and sleek compared to the other looks.
The idea here is to still convey a rugged appearance, albeit with a trimmed beard and combed hair. We’ll even allow you to use a hairdryer to achieve the same look – we won’t tell if you don’t! Credit: @jils_barbershop
Mini braids and long tresses
If you’ve got long hair, you can get Viking-worthy tresses simply by rocking the bed head look and throwing in a few mini braids for good measure. Just don’t go near a hairbrush!
This is one for the gents who really don’t like to style their hair. And the good news is, that once you’ve completed your braid, you’re done – no styling required here. Credit: @brockohurn
Long flowing tresses
If you’re thinking about growing out your hair to lengthy proportions, then this could be the style for you. Once you’ve got the length, it really requires very little maintenance at all. Even teamed with a beard, you’re actively encouraged to look a little disheveled, when rocking a Viking inspired ‘do! Credit: @von_dutch_france
We can’t help but love young Ragnar‘s hairstyles the best. What he gave to the world of braiding, in terms of inspiration, is priceless in our books!
We’re not going to lie, this look requires a fair amount of skill and upkeep, but we think you’ll agree, the braids, shaved head and long ponytail are a fierce look. Credit: @fimmeltravis
Top knot and full beard
It’s pretty hard to look tough when holding what could be the worlds most adorable puppy! Still, we’re loving this modern Vikings look and are swooning over the fact that his hair matches the hues of the pup’s fur… OMG!
Go for long tresses swept up high on top of your head and trim your beard into an angular shape. Credit: @tiborpusch.official
When Ivar ditched the undercut and choppy top, he made his look a little more battle-ready with this twisted, cornrow-inspired look.
We like the height the twists give and how neat and sleek this look is. You can still rock a shaved undercut, but you’ll need length on top to recreate this look. Credit: @tiborpusch.official
