The iconic Barack Obama hairstyle in Netflix’s new film Barry

It's a 'fro back!

If you’ve recently ran out of things to binge watch on Netflix, then you may want to turn your attention to their latest original film Barry, which is based on the early life of Barack Obama. The film – which is set to premiere on December 16th – has caused quite a buzz on social media, with actor Devon Terrell being cast in the lead role playing a young Obama.

And while we’re super excited to learn all about the life of the 44th President of the United States, we were also drawn to the iconic Barack Obama hairstyle showcased in the film – and we bet you will be, too!

Set in the early 1980s, the film documents Obama (nicknamed ‘Barry’) as he arrived in New York City, and follows the events of his time at Columbia University. According to Netflix, the film is set “in a crime-ridden and racially charged environment.

Barry finds himself pulled between various social spheres and struggles to maintain a series of increasingly strained relationships with his Kansas-born mother, his estranged Kenyan father, and his classmates.”

During his presidency, Obama has sported a sharp, neat buzz cut, which has gradually turned grey over the years. After all, running a country probably doesn’t leave much time to style your hair, so it’s understandable he would opt for a low-maintenance ‘do.

However, throughout the film, Obama is portrayed with a much shorter, cropped afro hairdo, which we think is totally stylish!

So, if you’re looking to recreate this iconic Barack Obama hairstyle, simply ask your barber to keep your hair relatively short, while still long enough to show off its natural texture.

And don’t worry if your mini ‘fro starts looking a little flat, because all you have to do, is grab your afro comb and fluff it out for some added volume!
