If you ask us, the pompadour haircut is one of the most popular short hairstyles of 2016 for men. Not only has it been donned by the likes of David Beckham, Justin Timberlake and Zac Efron, but it’s also become a sure hit with Instagrammers, too.
The pompadour haircut is popular for two reasons: because of its stylish and sophisticated look, and because it’s super easy to style. To get the perfect pompadour shape (which is traditionally longer on the top and sides), look to an experienced barber. Once you’ve got your hair cut correctly, it literally takes a matter of minutes to style. But if you haven’t yet mastered the right way to style your pomp, then you need to see our step-by-step tutorial below. You won’t be disappointed, we promise!
The pompadour haircut styling guide
Start with clean hair.
This hairstyle requires plenty volume at the front, so begin by washing your hair with a volumising shampoo and conditioner duo, like the TIGI Bed Head For Men Charge Up Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner. This will help to give your hair a bit more oomph before styling.
Prep your hair.
Once your hair has dried, spray some Toni&Guy Creative Style Spray Wax into your mane to help enhance your hair’s natural texture and to add some grip.
Editor’s tip: Spray this product at arms length, and then run your fingers through your hair to evenly distribute the product.
Add volume.
To create a pompadour shape, take a hair dryer and a round brush, and blowdry the front section of your hair backwards. Place the round brush underneath this front section of hair and twist the brush to continuously roll the hair backwards.
The combination of the heat from the hair dryer and the Toni&Guy wax will help to form, and then hold, the shape of your pompadour.
Apply clay.
Once you’ve achieved the basic shape of your pompadour, you’ll need to help set it in place with some hair clay. We recommend using a product with a matte finish, like the VO5 Extreme Style Matt Clay, as this will create a more sophisticated, modern look.
To apply the clay, take a fingertip-sized piece and warm it up between the palms of your hands. Then, gently run your hands over your pompadour to style it.
Final look.
And there you have it, a wonderfully pumped up pompadour! See, we told you it was super simple to style. Now, go forth and show off that pomp!
