How to pull off the mohawk hairstyle: 5 Tips and tricks you need to know

Proof that the Mohican really can be for everyone.

While mohawk hairstyles appear to be coming back in a big way, they’re definitely a far cry from the classic take on the look and styles we saw from their punk rock days back in the ’80s. Traditionally, a mohawk hairstyle involved shaving the sides of your head, and leaving a thin strip of hair down the centre, running all the way from the front to the back. Due to its extreme look, it was seen as a rebellious, out-there hairstyle – and generally not considered a gentleman’s look.

But we’re here to tell you that this time round, mohawks definitely are the cool kids on the block! And with plenty of modern variations, the mohawk has had a serious update that will have you looking edgy and on-trend. So, here are our top tips for pulling off this super stylish statement look.

Get a cut that suits your face, hair type and lifestyle

We know that this can seem like a rather bold haircut to get, but remember, the modern mohawk hairstyle is incredibly versatile. The key to pulling this look off is to choose a version of the cut that will complement your face shape, hair type, and lifestyle.

Anyone can pull off a mohawk, it’s just about finding a unique take on the style that suits you, so speak to your barber before taking the plunge.

Invest the right products

The way you style your mohawk haircut will depend upon a range of factors – from the length of your hair, to your hair type and its natural texture, and, of course, the look you’re going for.

However you choose to style it though, it’s important to make sure that you invest in the right products. So, for example, if you’re going for a classic, spiky style, you’ll need a stronghold product to hold it in place, like the Lynx Adrenaline Super Hold Cream Gel (£4.28*). If, on the other hand, you’re going for a slicked-back ‘hawk, you’ll need a product to keep everything looking sleek and smooth. In which case, you should try the Toni&Guy Mens Styling Fibre (£6.99*).

Embrace the top knot!

With its shaved sides and extra length on top, the modern mohawk lends itself perfectly to the current top knot trend. To get the look, simply scrape the top section of hair back, tie it into a knot and secure with hairband. This is perfect for when your hair becomes a little more difficult to manage in between cuts, or if you simply haven’t got the time or inclination to style it!

Add a beard

Let’s face it, beards look great with almost any hairstyle if they’ve been done correctly – and mohawks are no exception. Adding a beard to your mohawk cut will create a strong a contrast to the uber short sides and help to balance out the length on top.

Consider the fauxhawk

If you aren’t sure whether the mohawk is for you, or you’re just not quite ready to commit to fully-shaved or incredibly short sides? Why not go for the mohawk hairstyle’s more subtle cousin, the fauxhawk? Think of it as a softer take on the traditional style, with faded sides and a tapered top – creating a more professional, toned-down look.

To get the look, ask your barber for a short back and sides, and to leave a little length on the top. And make sure they use scissors rather than a razor to give your style a softer-looking finish.
