Even though we’re over halfway through the year, the man bun is still topping the stylish men’s hairstyle board. Hardly a surprise seeing as it’s been donned by A-list stars such as Brad Pitt, Harry Styles and, most recently, Matt Damon! So, it seems that the man bun really is here to stay.
However, if you’re looking for something a little more casual and low-key than the traditional ‘mun’, then why not opt for a messy, low bun, instead? It’s super easy to do, plus it’s got those effortless, laid-back vibes down to a T. So, you in?
Read on for our step-by-step guide on how to create a perfectly undone man bun.
The man bun 2.o: A step-by-step guide
Note that you’ll need medium to long hair to pull off this look, so if your hair is super short, then come back in a few months!
Start with clean hair.
This hairstyle works best with clean hair, so make sure you’ve washed your mane and let it air-dry before you create your ‘mun’.
And since the man bun always looks better full and thick, so if you have thin hair, use TIGI Bed Head 4 Men Charge Up Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner, as this will help to create the appearance of fuller-looking locks!
Create a ponytail.
Brush your hair to remove any tangles or knots, and gather it back into a low ponytail that sits about 2 inches above the nape of your neck.
Create a loop.
When securing your ponytail, the last time you go to pull your hair through the hairband, leave it looped halfway through. This will form the basis of your messy bun.
Cover the hairband and secure.
Using your fingers, lightly tug at the loop you created in step 3 to make it appear more messy and undone.
Then, take a small section of hair (approximately an inch wide) from your ponytail and wrap it loosely around the top of the hairband to cover it. Secure this piece of hair in place with a bobby pin.
Secure your style.
To help keep your bun in place and to smooth down any frizz, spray some Toni&Guy Creative Style Spray Wax onto it. Then, spritz more product into the palms of your hands and gently smooth them over the top of your head to help tame flyaways.
The final look.
And there you have it: a messy, low man bun done in record speed! Now, go forth and flaunt the man bun 2.0!
