Comb over hairstyles: How to style the look

Create the perfect comb over with these styling tips.

A timeless, slick hairdo that never goes out of fashion, comb over hairstyles have been sported by men for decades (don’t worry, we’re not referring to Donald Trump’s disastrous attempt at a comb over). Often worn by celebrities like Zac Efron and Channing Tatum, the hairstyle is an easy yet sophisticated look to rock. Plus, there are loads of different variations that you can opt for, like a slick comb over, or one with a short undercut.

While this look suits most men, we recommend steering clear of comb over hairstyles if you have very thin hair (try one of these hairstyles for men with thin hair instead!) – otherwise, it’s yours to rock. Watch the quick video above to learn how to style your comb over and add attitude to your look – and if you’re after more styling tips, see our pointers below.

Tips, tricks & styling how-tos for comb over hairstyles

Tip 1: Meet the comb over requirements

To achieve the perfect comb over, you need to have the right cut. This is where your barber comes into play. Your hair cut will depend on which comb over style you’re going for. If you’re after a comb over with an undercut, you’ll want the hair on the sides and back shaved short with a gradual fade transition, keeping the hair on the top at least 2-4 inches long. If you want a more mature, smart comb over, leave the top part 2-4 inches long, and have the sides clipped slightly shorter – but not shaved.

Tip 2: Create a deep side part

When sporting a comb over, you want to have a deep side part to give this classic look a modern, urban edge. You can use your natural hair part for a less defined look, or for a more accentuated parting (as seen in the video above), you can ask your barber to create a defined parting line with a razor.

Tip 3: Blow dry your hair smooth

Starting with fresh, clean hair, blow dry the top section backwards and to the side with the Toni&Guy Daily Conditioning Dryer, following the natural movement of your hair. For a comb over with slickness, use a comb to brush through your hair as you blow dry – this will help to ensure that your hair is smooth and tangle-free. For the sides and back of your hair, blow dry them flat.

Tip 4: Use a styling wax for strong hold

A great styling wax, like the Lynx Signature Clean Cut Look Definition Wax (£4.29*) is the key to perfecting comb over hairstyles. Warm a small 10p-sized piece in the palms of your hands, and work it through the length of your hair, covering root to tip. Once you’ve evenly distributed the wax, use a comb to smooth your hair into place. For a smart comb over look, brush your hair sidewards and slightly backwards, while following the natural movement of your hair.

And there you have it: a truly stylish hairdo that doesn’t require you to work too hard.
