We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: nothing says summertime cool quite like effortlessly tousled hair. The casually undone waves immediately evoke images of holiday locations, sandy beaches and laid-back surfer girls – all of which have us yearning for a fresh, sun-soaked style!

However, just because we don’t have the beach close at hand or any days off work on the horizon, that doesn’t mean that we can’t still nail the style! To look like you’ve spent all day by the sea (even if you’re a city girl), just read our terrific tips for rocking perfectly-tousled hair this summer, below.

Step 1

Wash your hair.

Tousled hair calls for volume, so begin this look by washing your hair with your favourite shampoo and conditioner.

Step 2

Apply heat protection spray.

Once you’re out of the shower, towel dry your hair so that it’s no longer dripping wet.

Then, apply the Toni&Guy Heat Protection Mist to help to defend your locks against heat damage.

Step 3

Dry your hair.

Now blast your strands with your hairdryer, using your fingers to lift your hair from the roots to create added volume.

Step 4

Apply a sea salt spray.

Once your hair is totally dry, spritz the VO5 Sea Salt Spray through your hair. This will add grit and texture to your locks, giving your look a more beachy texture.

Step 5

Curl your hair.

Then it’s time to curl your mane! Taking sections of hair around 1-2 inches thick at a time, wrap your strands around your curling wand and hold for a few seconds.

Editor’s tip: Remember, we’re trying to create a wavy effect rather than perfectly-defined curls, so you don’t need to hold the hair on the curling wand for very long.

Step 6

Brush through your curls.

Once you’ve curled your whole head, gently brush through your hair. This will transform your curls from defined ringlets into softer, loose waves.

Step 7

Apply an oil.

And last but not least, take a few drops of the Dove Pure Care Dry Oil in your palms and run it through your mid-lengths and ends.

This nifty product will help to add shine and fend off frizz throughout the day.

Trying to limit how much heat you use on your strands, but still want to know how you can achieve tousled hair? We’ve got just the thing!

Our 4-step heatless tousled hair tutorial

1. Start by scrunching a sea salt spray into damp, freshly-washed hair. This will help you to create your waves and give them more staying power.

2. Next, use a tail comb to divide your hair into sections. The number of sections you’ll need will vary depending on how defined you want your waves to be.

For loose waves, 4-6 sections will be fine and for tighter curls you may need more. Now twist each individual section into a mini bantu knot and secure in place using bobby pins.

3. Leave your hair to dry for a few hours or overnight if possible. Once dry, apply a few drops of your favourite oil or serum into your hands and then carefully remove each knot, one by one. The oil will help to prevent any frizz and add a gorgeous glossiness to your waves.

4. Give your look a quick brush through et voila! You’re ready to take on the day with your beach-inspired tousled hair.
