As stylish as it is practical – what more could you want from an easy updo?

Perfect for everyday, you can wear an easy messy bun out to brunch, around the office, or out for after-work drinks. Plus, this versatile ‘do is easy and quick to create, whether you have short or long hair.

Beauty vlogger Nikki Phillippi is ready to show you that messy buns are just as stylish as they are practical. Watch her video to create your own perfectly undone bun.

Creating an easy messy bun

Before you start: A happy scalp equals happy hair, and happy hair equals a drop-dead gorgeous updo (because you’ll need to do deeper hair parts, you’ll want your scalp to look in tip-top condition). To care for your scalp, wash and condition your tresses with the TRESemmé Renewal Hair & Scalp Nourish & Renew Shampoo (£4.99*) and Conditioner (£4.99*). Formulated with tea tree extract and sunflower seed oil, this wash and care duo will leave you with a healthy-feeling scalp.

1

Add volume.

To create an easy messy bun, it’s especially important to use a product that will help add volume to your hair. Nikki recommends applying the Toni&Guy Glamour Volume Plumping Whip  to towel-dried hair to help add body to limp locks.

2

Brush and section your hair.

Lightly brush your hair to detangle it, and create an off-centre part. On one side of your parting, take a 3-inch wide section of hair from the front to make your first rope braid.

3

Create a rope braid.

Split the section you created in step 2 in half. To create a rope braid, simply twist the sections around each other. Once you reach the bottom, use 2 bobby pins to secure the braid behind your ear. Place one bobby pin facing upwards and the other facing down to help keep the braid in place.

4

Secure and Repeat.

On the other side of your parting, take another 3-inch wide section of hair and repeat the process above to create another rope braid. Secure this behind the other ear.

5

Create a low ponytail.

With the rest of your hair, create a low side ponytail and secure it with a hairband. Lightly tug some sections of your hair at the root to loosen the ponytail slightly. As Nikki’s demonstrated, this style can also be achieved on super short tresses, too!

6

Set your 'do.

Although we’re aiming for an easy messy bun, we don’t want it to get even messier throughout the day, right? Setting your hair with some VO5 Classic Firm Hold Hairspray (£2.99*) will help your casual updo stay in place for longer, and aid in taming any pesky flyaways.
