The mushroom haircut, also known as the bowl haircut, is a short haircut in which hair is cut evenly short on the sides and back, while the length is left long on the top. The finished result looks similar to a mushroom head, hence its name. We’ve seen models on the runway with mushroom cut hair and even actress, Charlize Theron, sports it, which can only mean one thing – the bowl cut is officially cool.
But it’s not just the runway that’s enamoured with this style, as we’ve noticed that a surge of stylish ladies on Instagram are also taking the mushroom hairstyle plunge – but all with a modern twist.

’90s Bowl Cut
We love the way that this ‘90s-inspired mushroom haircut is choppy all over, creating height and volume, that begs to be tousled. The piecey layers help to give the look extra texture and style. Have we convinced you yet?
For a short cut, there are still plenty of fun ways to play around with your colour. Update your bowl cut with a cool ashy shade like this striking silver hue.
What this cut lacks in length it more than makes up for in texture. The Caesar cut-style fringe will really help to bring out your features and keeps the look fresh and unique.
Editor’s tip: If your mane tends to fall on the finer side, be sure to stock up on the TONI&GUY Sea Salt Texturising Spray. It’s specially formulated to help maximise volume, body and bounce to thin, limp locks. What more could a girl want?
If you want a look that’ll truly turn heads, opt for a statement precision cut like this one. The exaggerated bowl cut is made all the more eye-catching thanks to the super short shaved sides, which come together to create this stand-out style.
We love how the back and sides are super short with this cropped style, while the locks on top have discreet layers to create plenty of movement and texture. You’ll #slayallday with this look.
If you’re worried a blunt cut could look too harsh on you, try having your hairstylist create softer, feathered ends with layers of different lengths instead.
To create this beautiful, textured crop, curl small pieces of your hair with a thin barrel curling wand. Then, complete the look by using your fingers and a small amount of hair wax to twist individual curls around your face, until you’re happy with the finished look.
Editor’s tip: For short hairstyles, the VO5 Styling Wax is great to help mould your hair into your desired look and locking it in place for the whole day. To apply it, work a small amount between your palms and apply evenly to damp or dry hair.
While this boyish cut is shorter than most, it still manages to ooze a tonne of feminine, flirty vibes.
How could you not love this elfin mushroom cut? Not only does it open up the face, but also creates an elegant, model-like look.
This contemporary look is guaranteed to make you stand out of the crowd, especially if you pair a vibrant colour (or two!) with it. So what are you waiting for?
Micro bangs can look cool on all hair lengths but on shorter hair they make even more of an impact.
Eyebrow-Skimming Bowl Cut
We had to include this cool-girl cut in our bowl cut round-up, thanks to its textured, light layers and grown-out eyebrow-skimming length.
