Prom hairstyles to try now: The braided bun.

1. Braided top knot

It’s no secret: we here at All Things Hair HQ love braids. Not only are they ideal for summer, but they can also add a touch of romance and femininity to any look, meaning they’re a perfect hairstyle choice for prom. So, it’s time to give the tried and tested top knot a new lease of life by incorporating – you guessed it – some braids!

After placing your hair into a high ponytail, separate it into 4 equal sections. Then tightly braid each individual section (using a classic three-strand plaiting technique), securing each with a clear elastic hairband. Now wrap the braids around your ponytail and secure it with a few bobby pins. For a truly romantic touch, place a floral garland around your braided top knot and watch your date swoon!

2. Knotted low bun

Timeless and effortlessly simple, the knotted low bun is totally elegant and is one of our favourite updos for formal occasions! But what is so great about this look, is that it doesn’t have to be super neat, as the messiness only adds to its undone, romantic vibe.

To get the look, start by creating a clean middle parting and slicking back your tresses, before separating it into 2 low pigtails. Secure each pigtail with a clear elastic hairband (if your hair is thicker, use bigger bands). Then tie the 2 pigtails together in a knot, making sure to pull them as close to the scalp as possible, then continue to knot them until you’re you’re almost out of hair.

Once you reach this point, flip the knotted ponytail upwards into a bun and wrap the ends of the leftover hair underneath it. Secure with bobby pins and a stronghold hairspray, like the Toni&Guy Glamour Firm Hold Hairspray to finish.

3. Chignon roll

This messy, yet marvellous chignon roll is both practical and pretty, making it perfect for securing your strands for a night on the dance floor!

Start by creating a slightly off-centre parting, then work some VO5 Smoothly Does It Frizz Free Creme through your hair, from mid-shaft all the way to the ends. Then pull your hair into a low ponytail, securing it with an elastic hairband, and leaving a small section of face-framing strands loose.

Now carefully separate the ponytail into 2 halves, just above the hairband, before flipping and looping and the tail through the hole to create an inside-out pony. Take the hair that is left out of the pony, wrap it around your index finger and loop it through the topsy turvy ponytail; keep repeating this process until you’ve created a roll. To finish, secure the loose ends and the roll to your head with bobby pins and set the look with some TRESemmé Ultimate Hold Hairspray.
