1. Start longer

There’s an infinite number of ways to wear short pixie haircuts, each with their own unique traits. But if you’re anxious about braving the chop, you should definitely opt for a slightly longer pixie cut, rather than making a beeline for a super short look.

Remember, you can always cut more off later if you fall in love with your new pixie (which you undoubtedly will)! Just make sure you’re extremely clear when communicating with your stylist on how you want your pixie to look.

2. Consider your face shape

Did you know that different hairstyles suit different face shapes? With this in mind, if you’re considering a daring new look, such as the pixie, you should definitely check in with your hairstylist to see if the cut will flatter or hinder your best features.

Pixie cuts tend to work wonders with heart-shaped faces, but they can be adapted to work just as well on other faces types, too. (Don’t believe us? Here’s proof!) Essentially, it all comes down to a good base cut and how you style it.

Beware that super short haircuts like this can take a little while to get used to, since your facial features will take centre stage and become more prominent – so give it time!

3. Styling your pixie cut

Although the majority of pixie cuts require little styling, you’ll still have to invest some time if you want to give your cut a super chic finish. The good news is, there are lots of different ways to style your short pixie with minimum effort! The majority involve using products such as wax, hairspray, or a texturising mist to create high-definition looks that optimise movement, depth, and shape, giving your pixie a unique finish.

Note: Most short pixie haircuts will require you to use some styling products to style on a daily basis. With this in mind, we recommend you use a clarifying shampoo, like the TRESemmé Cleanse & Replenish Deep Cleansing Shampoo (£4.99*), at least once a week get rid of any product buildup.

4. Think about your hair texture

Whether you have thick, curly, fine or coarse hair, your hair type will help determine what kind of pixie is best for you. As a general rule of thumb, thinner hair tends to work best with pixie cuts that have lots of volume, texture and movement (think longer, heavily layered styles with bangs), whereas if you have thick hair, you might want to consider opting for a buzz cut or a much shorter, choppier style.

5. Make those salon visits more regular

While you’ll be able to play around with a wide range of styles and have the advantage of a short, carefree hairdo, pixie haircuts do come at a price (quite literally). You will need to visit the salon more frequently to keep your cut looking in tip-top shape, so don’t be lazy! Work in a regular trim and rest assured, your hairstyle will look on point at all times.
