Make your hair last as long as you do on the dancefloor.
What you’ll need
Too often we spend the best part of our morning/afternoon/evening primping and preening, meticulously prepping our tresses to create those perfect party hairstyles – which look completely on point at home, but fall into a flat mess barely an hour into said event. Oh, the disappointment. So how about some tips and tricks to help those party hairdos stay put?
Whether you’re off to a wedding, a prom, or your company’s summer gathering, follow the steps below and we promise your party hairstyle will stay perfectly coiffed for as long as you stay standing on the dancefloor.
How to keep your party hairstyles perfect day and night
Tip 1: Wash your hair the day before – not the day of the party – with a volumising shampoo, like the Dove Advanced Hair Series Oxygen Moisture Shampoo (£5.99*). It may sound strange, but second-day hair (which has just a little bit of oil build-up) will hold styles better, especially if curls or an updo is your party hairstyle of choice. If your hair is extra fine and you can bear it, try foregoing conditioner, too, as it will make your hair more slippery and less prone to hold (a leave-in conditioner spray will help detangle tresses before styling). Alternatively, TRESemmé’s Beauty-Full Volume Pre-Wash Conditioner (500ml, £5.99*) and Shampoo (500ml, £4.99*) are designed to be used in reverse order (conditioner before shampoo) to nourish your hair without weighing it down.
Tip 2: Invest in good quality dry shampoo, like the TRESemmé Instant Refresh Volumizing Dry Shampoo (£3.99*). Not only is it good for an instant refresh and removal of any excess grease at the roots, but using dry shampoo is a brilliant way to help build volume and texture without weighing your hair down. The trick is to give your hair an all-over spritz before you start styling to help increase grip.
For curls: First up, pick the right tools. For loose waves, opt for a thicker barrel (one inch) and for more defined ringlets, go for a slimmer barrel (about three-quarter inch). But if your hair is very fine, consider creating slightly tighter curls to begin with as they will loosen up during the day. As you style, remember to clip each coil to your head using a smooth metal hair clip (to avoid any indents) while they’re still hot. You can also give each coil a once over with some TIGI Catwalk Work It Hairspray (£13.95*) before letting it cool completely and unclipping it.
For structured waves and voluminous blow outs: Use the lowest setting on your hairdryer for a big, bouncy, beautiful blow out. The hotter and stronger the blast, the more likely you are to create frizz, not to mention more damage to the strands.
For super sleek, straight styles: Post-hair wash, avoid vigorous towel-rubbing. Instead, gently pat your hair dry to help prevent frizz. Invest in smoothing heat protectant, like the VO5 Smoothly Does It Heat Protect Serum (£3.99*). Apply it before styling with your straightener to help shield your hair from heat damage, as well as boosting its shine power.
The finishing touches
Hairspray, hairspray, hairspray! It may be obvious that hairspray is the key to longer-lasting party hairstyles, but pick the wrong product and you may as well not have bothered. Each and every ‘do requires a hairspray that performs a slightly different function. While you’ll definitely want a firmer hold hairspray for a neat updo, be sure that it allows a little bit of movement, too, for a more natural-looking finish. As for softer, wavy hairstyles, opt for a hairspray that promotes flexibility as well as volume.
Finally, don’t forget to mist a fine gloss spray, like the Toni&Guy Glamour Moisturising Shine Spray (£7.49*) over your finished style for shinier, healthier-looking hair that’s ready to party with you all night long.
